Some people frown at the idea of having IKEA furniture. But it cannot be denied that IKEA furniture are cheap and most of them are even pretty to look at—pretty simple, mind you, but still pretty.

There are IKEA hack ideas that can turn simple furniture into statement pieces. There are no fancy materials needed, just a change in Ikea furniture legs or maybe stacking two pieces on top of the other. Here are some great Ikea hacks:

Simple Mandal headboard to storage piece

The best thing about Ikea furniture is that nothing is as simple when it comes to function. In most cases, headboards are purely aesthetic. But with Ikea’s Mandal headboards, they can both be for storage and for aesthetic. Put one Mandal headboard on top of the other. Each headboard comes with removable shelves where you can place things. You can put your books on it so you don’t have to stand up to return it to its shelf when you’re done reading.

You may also put some magazines on another shelf if that’s what you want. You can also put your reading glasses on another shelf as well as an alarm clock. Then for purposes of beautifying your room, you may put flowers on another shelf or figurines or scented candles.

Simple spice rack to versatile storage space

Have you ever tried replacing the furniture legs of your bed with those bed risers so you can put stuff underneath it? Well, this is kind of how this works with the spice rack—you buy them for spices but actually make them versatile through a simple hack. With the use of a peg board, you insert the Bekvam spice racks on it so you can put office supplies on it—notebooks, papers and other things on it. The spice racks are great for organizing office stuff.

Simple bookcase to kitchen island

Bet you didn’t think this is possible: converting the simple Billy bookshelf to a kitchen island. A kitchen island is kind of expensive to make—in fact, this is something construction people do. But if you are just starting a home and you are on a budget, a kitchen island or counter is something you can do without. You just put a special marble slab or even a wooden one on top of the bookshelf to make it more appropriate in the kitchen.

The great thing about this is that you can move it anytime you want because it was not custom-built on the kitchen floor. You can place cookware and other kitchen utensils in the shelves supposedly reserved for books or food items and condiments. Use baskets or plastic wares to organize your kitchen stuff.

Simple magazine holder to all-around organizer

Through creative Ikea hacks, a magazine holder can be more than just a humble keeper of magazines. It becomes an all-around organizer. In an office, you can make a mail station out of magazine holders. You can use as many as you want, depending on the people who have a lot of communications. You can assign a holder for each person where the secretary can leave all communications for that person. They can also store printer papers.

If you are using the larger papers like the 11”x17”, you can combine two holders to create a large paper holder. They are also great at organizing the kitchen—for storing paper towels, aluminium foils, sealable plastics and many others. With some creativity, combining four magazine holders can even make a modular coffee table.

Simple cabinet to an adorable doll house

In most cases, an Ikea furniture piece is like a blank space. It’s a piece of heaven for creative individuals who want to make a statement piece out of a simple furniture item. Well, if you have a daughter, a Stuva storage cabinet is a perfect material for a project: creating a doll house.

You can customize the cabinet to your liking—buy your own miniature furniture pieces, draw a door of your preference as well as windows. The smallest and simplest Stuva has a divider so that your doll house can be a two-storey building.

These are just five of a dozen more hacks that you can do on simple Ikea items. The humble Ikea can become whatever you want it be with a dose of creativity. Ikea furniture may be cheap, but with your hack, it has the capacity to become a look of glamour and class.
