Have you seen wall murals in dentist offices, office reception areas or at a friend’s home? Love the idea of a mural but you just don’t know how to choose the perfect design?

As a muralist, I have a process for designing and hand-painting a mural…and it’s sort of the same as picking out a wallpaper mural for your home.

I thought I’d share my tips to take the confusion out of choosing wall murals for your home.

1) Get inspired by other people’s wall murals from their own homes (or businesses), rather than stock product images. Real murals from real people give you a better idea of what you like.

Go online to look for inspiration! You’ll find so many ideas on Pinterest, Houzz, Google Images or reading decorating blogs.

2) Ask yourself, “What’s the feeling I want in the room?” For wall murals in grown-up rooms, are you looking for serene, rustic or perhaps modern? Think forest, wood or cityscape.

If you’re looking at kids wall murals, are you going for exciting, cute or pretty? Think outer space, animals or flowers.

One thing wall murals can do better than paint or wallpaper is create a feeling, so keep it in mind when you’re shopping for your mural.

3) If you know the feeling you want to create in your room, but you’re having a hard time finding a mural that matches, try talking to a pro.

I’ve been in the mural biz since 2005, so I have a lot of experience helping people pick the perfect design.

4) If you’re looking at kids wall murals for a bedroom or playroom, it’s fun to get your children involved. They’ll have a hoot looking at all the wall murals – sports, animals, princesses – the sky is the limit (literally…there’s even outer space murals!).

Let them pick out the mural that they love - even if you think they’ll grow out of the design. Most of the wallpaper murals on my website are fully removable and reasonably priced, so you can change it up as they grow up.

Hate the thought of throwing out their childhood mural? Most of my wall murals are even reusable, so you can gift them to a friend with younger kids or donate them to a charity.

5) Ever hear of the saying, “Try before you buy?” Looking at wall murals on a computer screen is one thing.

But do the colours in the mural really match your décor?

Are the images clear, crisp and vivid?

Is the wallpaper thick and high quality?

I totally recommend buying a mural sample so you can see the colours and feel the paper. It’s an inexpensive way (at least when shopping on AboutMurals.ca) to ensure you get exactly what you’ve been dreaming of.

Just like love, you’ll know the right wall mural when you see it.

You’ll feel it in your heart.
And you’ll want to commit to it…but you won’t have to because they’re removable!
So wall murals are even better than marriage! (Just kidding). (Sort of).
