As You Choose
Written by Sharon Marquart
“Ancient Spiritual traditions remind us that each moment of the day, we make the choice to either affirm or deny our lives. Every second, we choose to nourish ourselves in a way that support or depletes our lives, to breathe deep and life-affirming breaths or shallow, life-denying ones, and in a manner that is honoring or dishonoring.” Gregg Braden - The Diving Matrix
Look around you. Your life right now is the reflection of the choices you have made up until now. It is only when you live in a victim consciousness that you believe you had no choice. As the victim, you focused on what was happening “to you” rather than how you can make life happen “by you.” The most empowering tool you have in creating a wonderful human experience in this adventure we call LIFE, is to remember that each moment you are at “choice point.” Each moment you have a choice about how you want to perceive the situation, you have a choice about what you want to believe about it, and you have a choice about how you want to respond. All these choices are within your power.
You may know someone or heard about someone or read about someone in a book or magazine that took a tragic situation and turned it into a positive one. You remember it because it inspired you. And you prayed that you never have to experience such drama. You don’t have to wait until a major event reminds you that you have the ability to make choices. You can begin each day consciously choosing how you want to live and create your life.
As your life unfolds a tapestry is created. It is by the choices you make that your tapestry weaves itself together in the form of either a beautiful design or a tangled mess. Your choices direct the flow and blend of patterns. Be mindful to create your life’s colorful tapestry by personally choosing your design and patterns.
There was a time in my life when I was caught up in a tangled web of defeating choices. I made choices that created drama and painful situations that kept me feeling powerless. I played out the “martyr” archetype and attracted people and situations that would give me a stage to show what I was made of. I played out the martyr so well that I could have been nominated for an Academy Award! I seriously wove martyr into all areas of my life while complaining how badly life was treating me. My turn-around came when I learned that I had the power to choose. I quickly and steadily untangled myself from the mess of a life I had created and began to weave choice into every day.
Here is an idea you can use to remind yourself how to use your power of choice to create a beautiful life. When you first wake up in the morning, perhaps in your morning prayers, meditation or maybe when you are in the shower, visualize walking through your day. Set your day up energetically before you even walk out the door. Create an energetic pattern of you making powerful choices well in advance. Then, as the day unfolds begin to consciously align yourself with those choices. You can begin with the small choices you decide each day. Begin by choosing consciously. For instance, imagine your commute to work. There may be a particular intersection that has a long traffic light. What are you going to do as you sit and wait? What are your choices? What will you choose to think about? When you arrive at work, how will you choose to greet co-workers and approach your work for the day? Write the word “choice” on a piece of paper and place it visibly in front of you. When frustration begins, glance at the paper and remind yourself that you are at “choice point.” Take a deep breath, a life-affirming breath, and then choose your response.
Every day, consciously breathe deep, life-affirming breaths that support you in living your best life. Weave a beautiful tapestry that you can be proud of and sure about. Honor your life and fill it with joy and delightful experiences. Celebrate in your creations!
