Crisis = Believe, Patience, Faith
Part #1 Believe
* excerpt from our popular book = Crisis, Call 911….Now what?
You’re in severe pain and don’t know why. You just fell over a piece of furniture, after passing out. Your child broke his arm. You smell fire burning and don’t know where. Your dinner guest is choking. You found your spouse “asleep”, but can’t wake him. So many scenarios, so many situations, so many reasons to call for help. You call 911; help arrives. Trained people have taken over the situation. The firefighters have come or maybe you’re on your way to the hospital, while Life Flight is being called. Now what?
First, Believe that you have done all that you can do and now the situation is being handled by people who have experience in crisis intervention. They are in contact with assistance and are in control. During this time, someone should be with you to help remember what is going on, note instructions and to ask questions. Call a friend or relative to come help you.
Believe that you are going to understand clearly what the situation is and what you’re supposed to be doing. It often helps to have paper and pen with you to write down everything – remembering is hard enough. Remembering during a stressful period is almost impossible. Ask questions and restate options to make sure everyone is on the same page and in agreement. If you need assistance with understanding or want another opinion, always ask for help. Sometimes, you might even want to think about who you can call for some advice. Networking is powerful. Call your friends, let them call their friends. You need a storage facility quickly or a place to stay? You need someone to secure your home? You need a specialist physician, like a plastic surgeon, an orthopedic surgeon or cardiovascular surgeon, get on the phone if you need a name.
Believe that, with help, you can be in control of yourself and your thoughts during periods of high stress. With the knowledge given to you, Believe that you will be able to find and have the best people available at the right time to help. Believe that with good questions and someone by your side, you will be able to understand what the situation is and all the options available to you. Believe that with a clear head, you will make good decisions.
