“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” and “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” brings us to “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
This third beatitude begs the question; “Why would Yeshua, who said; ‘Yet a time is coming and has now come when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth’ place any importance at all on ‘inheriting the earth’?” Didn’t he tell us to store up our treasures in heaven and not in the earth because in heaven, moth and rust do not corrupt?
It is my humble opinion that the answer lies in the understanding of his followers. Still being ‘attached’ to the things of this world, I believe we are brought to a better understanding of the concept, “Men of faith have courage” through this analogy. And further, that by complete surrender and submission to Yahweh, all of our needs will be met and so much more that it is beyond our comprehension. Isn’t that what “inheriting the earth” implies? Didn’t all the tyrants born of man try their best to conquer the earth? So, all I need to do is become meek and submit completely to the will of Yahweh in order to accomplish what all the tyrants throughout history tried to do by force and failed.
I try with all my strength to surrender completely to the will of Yahweh with the intention of developing my love relationship with him every single day and I fail utterly. Why? Because of free will; what it implies, and the instinctual fear of losing my identity along with everything else. In spite of being offered the entire world, I still balk at giving up all I am to the Creator of the Universe who is all love and absolutely benign, forgiving, gentle, humble and wishes with every fiber of his being to give it all to me. How can I allow myself to be subjected to ‘false pride’ to this degree, especially when I already know full well that my power is absolutely limited in relation to the infinite power which is Yahweh?
My sincere belief is that Yahweh, his purpose for us, is that we experience the boundless joy of eternal growth. This infinite joy experiences no stagnation. It opens us to the ever-renewing, ever-expanding bliss of perpetual growth; of an experience of perpetual creation.
With this ever-expanding bliss comes increasing responsibility to work toward perfection. But, I can only accomplish this a little at a time with the understanding that I will never achieve perfection, at least in this lifetime, only progress. This renders the means to be the end. What I am stating is simply another way of saying “The joy and excitement is in the journey, not the destination.”
With each new revelation, through this work, I discover, (mostly about myself), my talents, my salubrious qualities as well as my weaknesses and deficiencies requiring much work. As I undertake this task, I enter into a partnership with our Creator. This alone is a great honor and privilege. As the only One who is perfect, allowing myself to be transformed into his likeness of love, as “Yahweh is love” in and of itself produces ineffable joy.
One thing I have learned; The Holy One will do nothing to bring about my spiritual growth without my direct involvement. We all need this in the deepest recess of our being, but he will never break his covenant of allowing us our free will. This holy partnership with Yahweh can only be undertaken with our consent. This is absolute humility on the part of our Creator and this blows me away. He is the only perfection in existence. He is the only power in existence. And yet he endures my disbelief and my ambivalence as evidenced by my inertia, albeit my involuntary inertia.
This process, simply put, requires my looking deep within myself and allowing Yahweh to bring to light my flaws and imperfections alongside of my strengths. I have learned to look for manifestations of one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins of “pride, anger, lust, envy, greed, gluttony and sloth.” I have also been instructed to measure my spiritual growth by weighing the activity of the Oxford Groups Four Absolutes; “Absolute Unselfishness, Absolute Honesty, Absolute Purity and Absolute Love” beside of the selfishness, dishonesty, one or more of the Seven Deadly Sins and fear operating in my life.
It is interesting that, biblically, fear is the opposite of love. I have come to understand that the basis of all of my flaws and weaknesses is in fear. Love is the ultimate good in all of creation and is indeed the sum total of every good in existence. Fear is the one flaw that holds us back from that perfection which is of love; which is of Yahweh. Fear is an aversion to love and perfection and causes the ultimate sin; complacence.
Why would I propose complacence to be the ultimate sin? Because, love is the source from which all creativity and all of creation ensues. Creation is a result of the boundless, overflowing love which is our Creator. Complacence is the ambivalent antithesis of creation. It is the essence of inertia and not only puts a stop to growth but isolates inactivity and severs the bond of love between us and our Creator.
I agree with the notion that Yahweh wants only for us to be as he is. The ancient Hebrew name for The Holy One simply put: “IS”. He simply exists. He is and therefore his name reduced to its essence simply is - “IS”. The Holy One “IS” throughout the eternal now. My limited understanding of this is expressed by the thought that the only time I have is right now, this moment. The past is beyond my ability to recover even an instant. The future is beyond my ability to foretell. Yahweh exists in eternity where all of time exists in the eternal instant of now.
C. S. Lewis said, “In commanding us to glorify him, Yahweh is inviting us to enjoy him.” “Within him, we live and we move and we have our being.” Acts 17:28 “And so we know and rely on the love Yahweh has for us. Yahweh is love. Whoever lives in love lives in Yahweh, and Yahweh in him.” 1 John 4:16 - By taking complete delight in ‘being’ in his presence is, in my belief, what Yeshua meant when he said, “Yet a time is coming and has now come when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23
