Many people are actively discussing the law of attraction. This article is designed to give you a short synopsis and background for the law of attraction.

The law of attraction is a controversial theory commonly associated with New Age and New Thought theories. It posits that one should never dwell on the negative, as the "metaphysical principle of life" is embodied in a "law of attraction": "you get what you think about; your thoughts determine your destiny."[1]

One of the earliest known formulations of the Law is contained in the 1906 book (republished in 2006) Thought Vibration or the law of attraction in the Thought World by William Walker Atkinson, editor of New Thought magazine. Dick Sutphen affirms that the law of attraction states, in a nutshell, that like attracts like.[2]

In March 2006 a film The Secret based on, and explaining, the "law of attraction", was broadcast through the internet. The film is now available on DVD. Larry King, Ellen Degeneres, and Oprah Winfrey have recorded shows based on the film. A book based on the film has recently been released.[3] However, considerable criticism remains due to the lack of scientific scrutiny placed upon the claims of the book and video.

The Universal law of attraction (LOA) is the most powerful force in the universe. It is simple in concept but practice is necessary. But once you "get it", there is no looking back! It will be part of you forever. The simplest definition of this law is "like attracts like."

Other definitions include:

You get what you think about, whether wanted or unwanted.

All forms of matter and energy are attracted to that which is of a like vibration.

You are a living magnet.

You get what you put your energy and focus on, whether wanted or unwanted.

Energy attracts like energy

Everything draws to itself that which is like itself.

The law of attraction simply says that you attract into your life whatever you think about. Your dominant thoughts will find a way to manifest. But the law of attraction gives rise to some tough questions that don’t seem to have good answers. I would say, however, that these problems aren’t caused by the law of attraction itself but rather by the law of attraction as applied to objective reality.
