Ever have one of those days? Or maybe you're feeling discouraged, frustrated, or stressed?

Here are a few simple things you can do right away to put yourself in a more positive frame of mind so you'll be better able to tackle what needs to be done.

1. Chocolate. ;-) (I'm serious. It seems to trigger endorphins in the brain. Just be sure not to OD.) (And yes, there is plenty of scientific evidence that it works!)

2. Hot chocolate. Marshmallows or whipped cream optional. It's the chocolate (see above), plus the soothing warmth and probably the comforting associations going back to the (hopefully) less stressed times of childhood.

3. A good meal, preferably with a friend. But even a good solo meal can make you feel better (try fresh flowers for company). Consider having your favorite comfort food. It works. That's why they call it that!

4. A hot bath with a mood-lifting scent. Even a hot shower helps. Combine with hot chocolate for instant bliss.

5. A nap. I'm serious. Being well-rested will do wonders for your mood. Being worn out just about guarantees disaster. Keeping going when you're too tired to function is the ultimate in self-sabotage.

6. A walk in the park (or on the beach, or anywhere else, preferably outdoors, that you enjoy). Smile while you're walking or hum a tune you like. Sunshine will add to the overall effect.

7. A hug. If there's nobody suitable nearby, try calling a friend.

8. Pet a cat (or dog, or bunny rabbit, etc.) Borrow one if necessary. Or consider volunteering at the SPCA.

9. A movie that makes you happy and/or laugh, preferably both. A few years back, when I went through chemo and got quite depressed at times, I prescribed myself a happy movie a day. It made a HUGE difference.

10. Inspirational refrigerator magnets, greeting cards or mugs. I have them all over the house.

Are these tools simple and obvious? Yes. But they work, and sometimes it's hard to remember them when you need them most. Keep this list (or a similar one) around, maybe even stick it on your refrigerator, and promise yourself to do one or do several whenever needed.

Which ones should you start with? Just choose whichever ones seem easiest at the moment, or simply pick the ones you like best.
