If you could do just one thing to change your life and improve your odds for happiness, productivity and success, my recommendation would be to give up blame and take full personal responsibility for the results in your life.

Whenever we become victims of circumstances, blaming others for our problems, we lose all power to create our life the way we want it. But taking responsibility for whatever’s going on empowers us to change it.

In order to move forward powerfully, you need to let go of blame and shame (“They’re to blame” and “Ain’t that a shame!”). The blame shame game has never contributed to anyone’s success. Whenever I catch myself whining about my results, I am reminded of the lyrics of the Eagles’ song “Get over it!”

I turn on the tube, what do I see?
A whole lot of people cryin’ “Don’t blame me!”
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else,
Spend all their time feeling sorry for themselves,
Victims of this, victims of that –
Your Momma’s too thin and your Daddy’s too fat.

It’s like goin’ to confession every time I hear you speak.
You’re making the most of your losin’ streak.
Some call it sick. I call it weak.

You drag it around like a ball and chain.
You wallow in the guilt. You wallow in the pain.
You wear it like a badge. You wear it like a crown.
Got your mind in the gutter, you’re wearin’ everybody down.
You’re bitchin’ ‘bout the present and blamin’ it on the past.
I’d like to find your inner child and kick its little ass.

Get over it! Get over it!
All this bitchin’, moanin’ and pitching a fit.
Get over it! Get over it! Get over it!
