Intent is an interesting word - it always seems to be linked to something rather grand. 'I intend to find my purpose in life' might be an example. And it's an important intent. But what about those lesser intents? I intend to tidy the kitchen, for instance? It might not look like much, but let me let you into a secret: it's is a stepping stone.
For when we intend anything, no matter how humble, we are saying that we will do something and do so in a positive way. Tidying the kitchen, and doing so with presence of mind and with joy, can be a meditation as good as any other. When I tidy my kitchen, or living room, or wherever, I realize I'm treating myself well, and being respectful of the space. I'm bringing a small amount of order to a world that needs all the care it can get.
And when I treat myself and the room well, I'm prepared, I'm primed to treat everything and everyone I encounter that day just a little better than I might otherwise have done.
If we can't fix ourselves we won't do much good trying to fix the world. One step at a time. Pass me the dish towel.
