Warm, dry weather and the opportunity for children to play outside until the sun goes down. But it also brings its own set of unseen health hazards: allergies and respiratory problems caused by polluted air. Taking measures to prevent sickness is always a good idea, and there is much you can do to keep your kids healthy through the spring and summer months.
Pollen, dust, and air pollution cause symptoms in children that may significantly affect their quality of life. Runny noses, fatigue, colds, sinus infections and asthma are common among children sensitive to allergies and polluted air. While medications can help with allergy symptoms, they come with the risk of dangerous side effects and are not necessarily safe for children. A better approach is to do what we can to prevent the symptoms in the first place.
Keeping children inside is not a healthy alternative. A shower after playing outdoors makes sense. Another common sense approach is to teach your child how to wash the body’s respiratory filter, the nose. Without cleansing, it can become a source of infection.
In my two decades of treating children for spring and summer respiratory problems, I’ve found a simple and effective solution to runny noses, asthma, colds and allergies: nasal washing. It is very clear that washing the nose is more effective and refreshing than simply sniffing salt water, and children as young as two years old can easily learn the technique.
When I realized how important this was for keeping children healthy in my pediatric practice, I developed my own system to provide safe and successful nose washing for both children and their parents. My patients have found nasal washing has made a big difference in the health of their families.
“With these last few weeks of cold and flu season and the start of SPRING, I have been recommending NASOPURE washes to my patients. I have them view a DVD going over the reasons why and how one washes the nose. So far, most of my patients feel the nasal rinses have helped their symptoms, whether or not they are suffering from a cold or allergies or both”. Celina Bernabe, DO. Allergy and Asthma Care, PA, Leawood, KS
Special nose washing systems developed specifically for the little squirts make it safe, easy to learn, effective, and surprisingly economical. This adds new meaning to our grandmother’s wisdom when she advised us to “Keep your nose clean!”
It turns out Grandma was right all along.
