Managing “What if”

“What if” are two of the most powerful words in our language. “What if” is the key that unlocks our imagination. Our imagination opens the door to the world of possibilities. Sounds wonder-filled doesn’t it? We have the power to change our lives with the “what if” key.

It is vitally important that we learn to manage “what if.” Without conscious management, we use the “what if” key to open our default programming. The default programming was installed in us as children by parents, family, and community that were not very awake or enlightened. Through no fault of their own, they did their best in programming us on how to experience life. Now, at this level of our spiritual evolution, we know a better way.

We know that our thoughts, our imagination, and our beliefs are reflected in our physical and emotional energy field. And that energy field sends out signals, similar to radio signals. Our signals “tune" us into similar frequencies. We attract people, places and situations that are on the same wavelength as we are.

Without new management skills, when we get into an uncomfortable mood, which happens daily, we begin to “what if” ourselves into a worried and anxious state. It goes something like this: First we have a situation presented to us by life that makes us feel uncomfortable in some way. We begin thinking about this situation. The “what if” game begins to play out in our mind. Mental images of the “what if” begin to form. The images become worse and worse. Feelings are evoked from what our imagination has created. All our senses become engaged in fear and we literally have to shut down in an exhausted state of mind. Unconsciously we have used the “what if” key to open the default programming. We have used our mind to imagine the possibilities that bring us the most fear.

Take a moment to walk though this process in relationship to something that made you uncomfortable this week. Perhaps something about finances, or a relationship challenge or maybe something happened at your job. Where did your mind go? Did you fall into worry and anxiety? Did you care for yourself or scare yourself?

When we learn to manage the “what if,” a buzzer sounds each time the default programming is about to take over. We become empowered to redirect our imagination. We stop the runaway train of thinking from taking us downhill and redirect it upwards to new and hopeful possibilities. The process is the same but the pattern of thinking changes. The difference is we use our thoughts to bring us joy rather than pain. Instead of the images becoming worse and worse, they become brighter and better.

The best way to learn how to manage "what if" is to practice. You can practice by setting time aside daily to imagine, to “what if”. Moving through your day becomes positive and joy-filled. With daily practice, two things happen. One, you become proficient in managing the “what if” and two, you tune your radio signals to a higher frequency. Through practicing the positive use of your “what if” key, your life begins to unfold in new and exciting ways.

I invite you to share your experiences with me as you learn to manage your “what if.”
