EMOTIONAL/SPIRITUAL WELLNESS
Many forms of so-called alternative medicine seem a bit odd to older Americans. And it’s true that the science behind some of them is mixed at best. But that is not the case with massage therapy. There are many studies showing that a good massage not only feels great, it can be great for your health and well-being too.
Most people know that massage helps sore muscles heal and relieves tension and stress. But according to the Mayo Foundation, that’s not all it can treat:
• Anxiety. Massage reduced anxiety and withdrawal symptoms in adults trying to quit smoking, research found.
• Pain. Studies of people with fibromyalgia, migraines, recent surgeries, and back pain showed pain relief through massage.
• Alcohol withdrawal. Massage, when combined with traditional medical treatment, increased feelings of support, safety, and commitment to therapy.
• Immune system. People with HIV who received massages showed an increased number of the cells that defend the body from viruses and cancer.
• Cancer treatment. Cancer patients who received regularly scheduled massage therapy during treatment reported less anxiety, pain, and fatigue.
• Self-esteem. Massage involves direct contact with another person through touch, and that special attention can improve self-image in people with physical disabilities and terminal illnesses.
Massage, like most medical treatments, isn’t recommended for everyone. Discuss massage with your doctor before you make an appointment. Also, check with your health plan. Many plans cover some or all of the cost of massage therapy.
