You are preparing to give a speech in a few minutes and you can feel the butterflies in your stomach fluttering. You hope to deliver your message eloquently and with confidence, but you start to hear that negative internal voice starting to question your abilities to pull it off. You are attending a party and you see a very interesting person across the room that you would like to get to know. You can feel some hesitation in yourself. What if you make a bad first impression? You are getting ready to step into an interview room where a panel is preparing a series of questions to ask you. You hope your outward appearance can cover up the nervous energy you feel in your body. If only you had more self-confidence.

Many of us can relate to the above situations. Self-confidence is not something that you are born with. It's not one of those false beliefs that say you either have it or you don't. It's something you develop. The question is, how do you develop self-confidence? Here are five secrets to turn on and turn up your self-confidence:

1.Change Your Physiology- Since what you think affects the body and how you move your body affects the mind, start by changing your physiology. Ask yourself this question, "How would I move my body if I felt incredibly confident?" Now, "act as if" you were incredibly self-confident. Notice how you are standing and carrying your body as you imagine yourself incredibly confident. Notice how you breathe, as you are feeling incredibly self-confident. Practice adopting this "act as if" approach to your life. If you need an example, observe how a confident person uses their physiology and then adopt these elements into your own physiology.

2.Use Visualization- Close your eyes and imagine yourself in situations where you want more self-confidence. Imagine yourself handling the situation in a confident manner. Bring in all of your senses as you imagine this (sights, sounds, smells, feelings). The more vivid you make these scenes the more powerfully effective they become. When you do this exercise you are programming your brain to react in an actual situation the way you want it to.

3.Self-Talk Awareness- What is self-talk you ask? It is that internal voice inside your head that talks to you everyday. Sometimes it says positive things and other times negative things. Become aware of what you say to yourself. If you are saying negative things, say to yourself, "I release these negative thoughts. They have no power over me. Instead, this is what I what I want and expect to happen," (say to yourself the positive outcome you want).

4.Anchor Yourself- Create your own positive confidence anchor. An anchor is a trigger that causes a particular response. We have anchors all around us (i.e. the smell of a fresh baked apple pie brings back the positive feelings of grandmas house or hearing a certain song that triggers positive emotions because we linked it to a good experience in our past). To set up a confidence anchor do the following steps:

·Close your eyes and go back to a specific time when you felt really confident. Make the images vivid and add all your senses to the scene. When you feel those positive emotions come up, take a deep breath and then pinch your right forefinger and thumb together and hold them. Then in your mind say the words "complete confidence".

·Repeat this same procedure with another 3-4 positive experiences, stacking them one on top of the other each time pinching your thumb and forefinger of your right hand together.

·Open your eyes and look around the room.

·Take a deep breath, squeeze your right thumb and forefinger together and say, "Complete confidence". Notice how you feel in your body. You should be feeling very positive right now! If this is not the case, go back and add some more experiences and retest. Use the thumb and fore finger anchor anytime you want a burst of self-confidence!

5.Work With A Professional Hypnocoach- A Hypnocoach is trained professional who uses a combination of hypnotherapy and motivational coaching techniques to help remove and replace limiting beliefs and fears that keep people from developing self-confidence. Those negative emotions are replaced with positive emotions and beliefs.
