Early one morning,I was sitting at my kitchen table gazing out the window at nothing in particular. For me, this is a wonderful time of day. In it, I prepare myself for whatever the day may bring and at the same time, try to bring some unique gifts to the day.
My office is now in my home so the commute from home to office takes less than thirty seconds by foot. Instead of finishing breakfast and going directly to my office, I spent some time enjoying the view from the window. Since we were up late the previous night and there was no school scheduled for today, the children were sleeping in.
Normally, outdoors on a day such as this, there are two or three blue jays, a cardinal or two, a couple of squirrels and a chipmunk. They come to feed on the seeds we leave for them and their social habits made it possible for them to tolerate one another in such a way that each one gets his fair share of seeds. While witnessing their antics I noticed several blue jays appear nearby. Moments later, a number of cardinals joined the group followed by a few robins and some little yellow finches.
So many years I’ve lived in this house and watched the birds in the early morning hours, but never have I seen so many different species at one time at the feeder. I became increasingly more curious as the entire area surrounding the tree began to fill up with a variety of birds and animals. There were now a couple of rabbits — I knew that we’d spotted a few of those. Some squirrels joined the congregation and two more chipmunks arrived on the scene.
All in all,it appeared like an animal jamboree. The multicolored feathers of my flying friends blended with the colors of the small animals, leaves and trees creating an animated painting-in-motion. This vision drew me back in memory to a dream I experienced when I was barely seven years old. All through my travels and the intervening years, I’ve always held vivid memories of this dream, but could never make much sense of it.
