“Well, it’s great to see you both. Off on a trip,I see. But then again, you couldn’t be going to or coming from the same place,” I said as I gestured at their attire.
“No,I’m going to visit a friend,”said Gideon. “He’s experiencing some difficulties in his business and asked if I could help him get things back on track. I’ll be away for a short while and then I’ll join you and Marla. Would you like to hear what we have in mind?”
“Sure,” I replied.
Marla took up the conversation, “We have a great idea. It’s been a while since you’ve had a really good vacation. Every time you travel, it’s been mostly for your work with hardly any time for relaxation. So we have this great idea.
We’re free for the next few days and I think you are, too. We thought it would be great to visit one of the ‘islands in the sun.’ As you can see, I’m already dressed for the occasion. What do you say?”
I hesitated for a moment, somewhat overcome by the spontaneity of their proposal. Gideon noticed my apparent discomfort and immediately jumped to the rescue. “I think it’ll do you a lot of good,” he said. “As a matter of fact, I think all of us could use some ‘non-work.’ We’ve all been much too busy recently. Your children are away for a while and you have the next few days all to yourself. If they need you, they could always reach you through your voice mail. You and Marla go ahead; I’ll meet you both in time for dinner.”
“This all sounds too fantastic,”I quickly replied. “It’s a great idea, but I really can’t afford it — not for a while at least. Still a pile of bills to pay. But I’d love to go when funds are available.”
“Don’t worry about the money. It’s been taken care of,” said Marla.
“You mean we’ll travel in one of those transdimensional shift transporters? Here one minute, there the next?”
