A number of ADHD medications are hitting the market, joining the old Ritalin standby. Concerta, in its relatively short existence, has already grabbed a sizeable portion of the ADHD medication market share.

Although Concerta offers a number of advantages over the older ADHD medications, it also has several side effects that people with Attention Deficit and parents of Attention Deficit children should be aware of before administering this medication.

Concerta medication for ADHD and ADD is a once-daily treatment and, when introduced, was the first time-release formula. A modified version of Adderall, Adderall XR, followed with a time-released delivery system.

The Concerta capsule has an outer coat of medication that dissolves quickly and then two small compartments of medication inside that release gradually.

The time-released system of the Concerta capsule provides up to 12-hour coverage and provides more even coverage for ADHD symptoms but there are a few drawbacks with the capsule form.

_ If not taken early in the morning, manufacturers recommend skipping the dose for that day since the stimulants will affect normal sleep patterns.
_ Some people find that, even with early morning dosing, Concerta significantly disrupts normal sleep patterns.
_ Because of the tablet's non-deformable shell, the Concerta pill cannot be cut to decrease the dosage. This aspect causes trouble for people with Attention Deficit still working to find the best dosage levels or for those who wish to give their child a lower dose for half-days at school. Increasing or decreasing by any amount requires a new prescription.
_ Parents cannot crush the tablet and mix with food for children who have difficulty swallowing pills since crushing the Concerta medication will also destroy the release mechanism.
_ The Concerta shell does not completely digested and remnants of the Concerta tablet can often be seen in stools. Although most people’s digestive systems can typically pass a wide variety of very interesting articles and does not typically pose a serious health hazard, Concerta is not recommended for people with gastrointestinal narrowing and digestive problems.

Concerta Side Effects:
Concerta side effects seem less pronounced than Ritalin and Dexedrine side effects. Although Concerta side effects are less pronounced than the older medications’ side effects, the Concerta medication for ADD and ADHD still pose negative side effects, as do other ADHD medications.

Concerta Side Effects include:
_ abdominal pain
_ aggravation, nervousness, hostility, sadness
_ drug dependence
_ dizziness
_ headache
_ tics
_ insomnia and prolonged sleepiness
_ loss of appetite
_ increased coughing, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract infection
_ vomiting
_ allergic reaction
_ increased blood pressure
_ psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations).

Concerta should not be used by people with marked anxiety or agitation, glaucoma, or tics or during treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

The stimulant methylphenidate, also used in Ritalin, is the active ingredient in the Concerta medication for ADHD and ADD. The medical community has not yet determined the long-term effects of having methylphenidate in the bloodstream for prolonged hours every day for numbers of years.

In stating the potential for abuse and dependence on this drug, the Concerta manufacturer also instructs people to inform their doctor if their child has ever used or been dependent on alcohol or drugs, or if the child is now using or dependent on alcohol or drugs.

Concerta, along with all other ADHD medications currently on the market, is not recommended for children under the age of six since its safety and effectiveness has not been determined. Despite ADHD drug manufacturer's own labels warning against prescribing these powerful drugs to young children, doctors increasingly prescribe ADD medications to children under the manufacturer recommended age.

Parents should carefully consider the health effects of placing small children on medications for ADD and ADHD, even if the child's health care provider prescribes an medication for ADHD or ADD.

The Concerta medication is about 70 percent effective in decreasing the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder, which is about the same level of effectiveness to Ritalin, Adderall and Strattera.

Although the prevailing ADHD medications have about the same level of effectiveness on the general population, children and adults react differently to the different formulations. Ritalin might produce severe side effects while Concerta side effects might be minimal. Adderall side effects could present themselves differently than Strattera side effects.
People using ADHD medications know that these little pills are never the “cure-all” answer. Attention Deficit requires a multifaceted approach which requires many different tactics and combination of tactics. What works is highly individual, depending on individual needs.

Many people with Attention Deficit Disorder and parents of children with Attention Deficit Disorder find great Attention Deficit Disorder and ADHD success from diet supplementation - especially with amino acids and essential fatty acids - a shift in parenting tactics, modifying the home and school environment, biofeedback, neuro-linguistic programming, stress relief measures and exercise.

The greatest successes are found by being bold and trying a combination of many measures.

Hey Jeannine! So good that you put this out here.. I have seen too many children and adults suffering from bad side effects.. As some parents mention here, children have to go on Prozac for depression which is one of the side effects, but if they would know what the ling term effects of Prozac are, they would probably not even dream about giving it to their children... Increased rates of suicide is only one of them! On my website (http://eft4add.com) I talk diet, and I teach people an easy and free meridian tapping technique which works wonders for ADD and ADHD and their symptoms. 85% of the children does not need to take any drugs anymore, and do much better at school than with medication. I am sure that in combination with your supplements we have a winner here. Charlotte

I'm 17 and I just started to take Concerta after being diagnosed with ADD. I have been on the medicine for just under a month and I currently taking 18mg. I can tell I am more focused on the medicine, however, I have had severe mood swings (anger, sadness). Plus a loss of appetite, since I started taking the medicine. I have been working out for an hour or more, three times a week since I started the meds, and I've lost 4 pounds (its been three weeks). I usually lose weight really slowly, so I think it is a side effect due to having almost no appetite. The weight loss definitely isn't hurting me, since I packed on holiday weight, however the severe mood swings are horrible. However I am a junior in high school and am taking two college courses, and I have seen an increase in my grades. However, so far, I pretty much hate the medicine, due to the severe mood swings.

Hi,my daughter is 8,she has been on retalin for a year, but the last check up the doctor changed it to Concerta. She has been on it for two weeks now.So far it seems her appetite is fine, but last night sitting at the table i noticed she was talking to herself and her eyes went all big,it lasted a few seconds then I asked her who she was talking to.She said no one,but one of the side affects is hallucination. So I'm scared now if we should carry on with this medication or go back to retalin where there were no side affects.

I'm 17 and I have been taking 54g of concerta for 2 years. I'm now planning on switching off it. When I first started I was fine, but now I have constant mood swings, which is totally against my nature. My boyfriend is the only one who really sees this, and he says I'm like a different person. I have to constantly scream or throw fits, or else I feel like the rage just keeps building inside of me. Though I have an outstanding gpa, I feel that the negatives outway the positives. Don't keep taking the meds if you start to show severe signs of aggression as it seems to only get worse.

My 7 yr. old son is on the lowest dosage of (18mg)of Concerta after trying Adderall XR at the lowest dose. He didn't take the Adderall very long because of all the nightmares and meltdowns. The Concerta has helped him a lot in school but is affecting his emotional well being, feeling depressed, crying, etc. He hasthe physical side effects like headache, lack of appetite, and INSOMNIA. I decided to discontinue it and try a more natural approach with his diet and behavior modification. His teacher called within hours saying that he was totally off task and seemed like "he wasn't the same person". I told his teacher I am willing and prepared to work with her and the school to come up with some strategic ways to help him but I refuse to subject him to taking such strong meds just so he's "well behaved" and paying attention. His life is more important to me than the grades he receives as a 2nd grader.

My son is 9 and has been taking Concerta for about 3 years now. His dosage has been increased little by little and he is on 72mg day. This medication has worked wonders! His school work is actually being completed (past #1!). I have had nothing but excellent things to say about this med, HOWEVER, now I'm a little worried. He's been calling himself a werewolf (kid's stuff), didn't think much of it until today. I got a call from his school. He bit a kid and said he just kind of didn't know what happened. I really thought he was goofing around, but he is very sincere about this werewolf stuff. I feel terrible for him. He was building a nice peer group, but who knows now? Has anyone has anything similar happen? He's been on this dose for over a year now.

Haha those posts are in reverse order, read all posts by andrew from the bottom post to the top post.. Thanks

oncerta sucks but it does wonders for me academically. I hope what i've said can help any parents concerned about their children, or children concerned about themselves. Don't think your weird or antisocial or different, its just the medication. Anyway try the things i've told you above; i am currently doing very well in school and am very happy with my social life. I hope I helped
Andrew
3)No Concerta on Fridays or Weekends I wont take it unless i have a really big test on Friday. You all know how great and energetic and happy and social you are off the medication. Since Fridays and Weekends im hanging out wiht my friends or at partys, this is a good time for me not to take the medication because it helps to preserve a social life. 4) Don't sweat social situations when your on the medication This is the biggest thing. Sitting at the lunch table with your friends who are all talking and having a great time can be really stressfull when on concerta. I personally always feel awkward and quiet and tend to say stupid random things. Honestly the best thing you can do is let one of your good friends know how much concerta sucks, and word will spread to your other friends and they'll understand why your being so quiet. You dont want your friends to think you've changed and arent you anymore.
Andrew
1)Eat A Big Breakfast Before Taking Concerta This makes the effect of loss of appetite not as strong and will often get rid of the headaches and dizziness. You wont get that lightheaded quiet feeling (you know what i mean if you take the pill). Also due to the lessened effect, it will help you eat lunch which is always key. Skipping meals, as easy as it is to do on this pill, will only make you feel worse. 2)Eat Lunch Force yourself to do it...its key to not crashing later on in the day and will prevent that gassy stomach pains and dry mouth feeling.

Hello all. I am 16 years old and have been on ADHD medication since 5th grade. I am on 72 mg of Concerta every morning, and sometimes i have 10 mg Ritalin tablets to take at night if i have a big project or a large homework assignment to do. This drug helps my grades tremendously, however i get the side effects of loss of appetite, aggravation/nervousness/hostility/sadness, and the dizziness and headaches. I know how much it sucks and you feel like your a completely different person from when your off the medication. When i take it i almost feel like a robot and am very antisocial. In 10th grade i stopped taking it because of how much i hated it, and my grades dropped tremendously. Now that i'm a junior, i have restarted taking the medication and my grades are back up. Over the years i have finally come across a nice routine to stay concentrated and get good grades, but to still be a happy social person. A few things that work for me are:

I'm 43 and am on concerta. So far so good with it. I've been able to concentrate more better and get things done. My mood has been better too. I'm not as figety as usual. My side effects are decreased appetite, but I don't mind that, since me shedding a few pounds won't hurt. I also have a metallic like taste in my mouth I've noticed and been really thirsty. Those I can live with..

I was on Strattera for several years and it's a non-stimulant medication which worked great - i could sleep at night and didn't feel moody but...i had a "sweating" side effect that was horrible and decided to discontinue as just sitting would sometimes have sweat running down my leg!

im 16 and i just started taking concerta (18mg) and like 1 month later the doctor upped it to 34. i started taking it in september and ive lost dangerous amounts of weight. i was 110 now im 102. i skip days and feel completely normal and have a great time and feel like myself. ive noticed a lot of depression w/ this pill and i came to a point where i started cutting myself...and also i lay in bed for about 3 hours until falling asleep. a couple weeks ago i suffered severe pain in my diaphram and i had to go to the hospital but they said i was fine? they did an ultrasound and everything its killing me! should i stop taking this? i do kinda like the weight loss thing and the helping in school thing but the other side effects suck...

My son 8 yrs old and he's been taking Concerta(18mg) for 1year now. He's doing good in school and his behaviour is doing ok. But I noticed that he's losing his weight. loss of appetite and now he is complaining pain in his knee and every morning he is experiencing it. I would like to ask - is this one of the side effect of concerta? I would appreciate if you could answer me. Thanks

I am not sure how old this post is, but I wanted to say my doc put me on thie, i am 36. I woke up every single morning with horrible muscle pain. Please listen to your kids. If they say something hurts, then something is wrong. Candy

I have just started Concerta. I was taking melatonin to sleep and I just switched to a strong melatonin than what I was taking. I still can't sleep, I get headaches everynight, I am never hungry, I also get the heart palpitations. I noticed that Concerta helped a lot when I first started taking it, but now it seems not to help as much (even when my Dr. gives me a higher dosage). I am only 19 and start college in a few days, do any of you have any ideas on a different ADHD medication or something extra (like a vitamin) I could take that would help this be more affective? Thanks!

my son has sleeping problems and my holistic dr. said to try 5htp and GABA also try drinking camomile tea that is a natural relaxant. 5HTP is tryptopan which are boby naturally produces so we can fall asleep. some people don't produce enough of this. GABA has helped with his ADHD symtoms. Also taking vitamin B-6 or B-12 can help to relax you and improve your focus and concentration. Hope this helps.

My stepson takes the smallest amount of Concerta and a month ago started sniffling alot and now it's progressed into a nagging small cough. He's been on Concerta from March 09 till today, Xmas 2009, so 9 months. He's 9 years old. Any thoughts this is a concerta side effect?

i got sinus infections alll the time when i took this medication.

I strongly suggest not letting your kids take this. I used to take this years ago for my ADHD problems, the symptoms are severe. Extreme hallucinations, night terrors, fear of basically anything, feeling ill randomly. Do not put you kids through this, ritalin and risperdol are the way to go. Ill never forgive my parenÞs for making me take concerta, and I'm sure after your children suffer the side effects of this horrible drug, they surely won't forgive you. You have no idea, what your actually putting your kids through with this medication.
Guest
I read your paragraph (concerta) and my son takes 54mg of concerta and is having night terrors and almost the same things that your are talking about. but did you ever have problems with memory loss? hopefully you will get back to me. Feb 2010 my son has appt with his doctor and I am going to try to get him another drug. Thanks

Hi...my 9 year old has been on Concerta for 3 years and this past August we increased his dosage to 27mg. He never seemed to have a problem aside from loss of appetite and occasssional 'meltdowns'. However, within the last 2 weeks he has became lethargic (to the point of blacking out once) and complains of a headache (not sever....at least he says). This has happened right around dinner time. We proceed to try to hydrate him and give him food, but both times he eventially ends up vomitting once or twice and then seems O.K. Could this be a side effect of the Concerta? Seems weird to have this effect all the sudden. Have you seen/heard of this before? Thanks
Guest
hi i have my son on the concerta for nine months and he's been coughing and he his a sore throat.what should i do should i take him off the pill because he take 56mg and i thing it is geting worse
kristinaa
hi. umm. im on 36 mg, they have to keep switching my dosage from 56 to 36. those are side affects. one thing iv noticed while on it, iv been on it (on and off) for five years now, is he HAS to eat while he is hungry. i get hungry an hour after i take it, so i try to eat and keep the food down. and then i will get hungry around seven, so ill try to eat as much as i can. i have not passed out, but i can never stay still. im shaking as im typinng this now. headaches come from lack of food, i get those all the time. twice a day if that. have you tried giving him advil? i take advil every four hours.
haylie
hi, i dont have adhd or add or anything like that. i am in college & i was wondering if concerta would help me stay up & focus on getting all my school work done, i dont want to take it if it wont work tho, but im curious to trying it. my mother in law gave me a whole prescription of it bc of her 13 yr old son was on it & it made him very mean after he came home from school, so the Dr switched his med, so i have the prescription, & i was wondering if it would be ok to take to help me stay up & focus on my school work?
Guest
umm. no. its not worth it. people go insane on it. i have lost myself in it. i hate it, all concerta is supposed to do is help you concentrate. and its made for people like me whos brain is unbalanced. if your that despirate to stay awak, theres something called energy drinks,
Candy
Hey haylie. I know college is hard. But taking that would be a mistake for several reasons. One, these meds can give someone not needing it a sudden heart attack. Two, you could get addicted and have a harder time when ou run out. Three, This is a great time for you to figure out how to manage your time and it will help you with every day in your life !!!
college student
Haylie, you should not take anyone elses prescription, not to mention it is against the law. the drug is for people with ADHD not for experimenting with. you just need to allow for more time for your studies. i know it is difficult, but you can do it.
Guest
No you idiot inject your self with caffeine that will do the trick concerta has to many negative side affects its completly destroyed my social life
Guest
you realize what your doing is illegal right?

My 10 year old son has been on Concerta since he was in first grade (about 3 yrs now). I cannot tell you what an improvement it has made at school and at home. He is now on 72mg which is the highest dose I have seen a child take, but his side effects are minimal and this works for him. I find that if I give him high calorie/high protein meals prior to his morning dose and in the evening when his appetite picks up, this helps tremendously with the loss of appetite. I was nervous at first, but I would do this 100 times over. I don't know how we survived prior to this medication!
Guest
Thank you so much for someone saying that it is helping their child without hurting them. My 16 year old just took his first dose this morning and I was starting to get a little worried with all the negative feed back. The fact is that everyone reacts differently to medications, and there is no way to know how you will react until you try it. I have hope that my son will react well.
Guest
I, too, was getting freaked out about starting both my kids on Concerta 3 days ago. My son will be 13 and my daughter will be 19 (she has Spina Bifida.) I work in healthcare and I just want to say that while I know that some have experienced severe side effects, it does NOT mean that everyone will. If my kids have side effects I will make them an appt. and have their medication dosage altered or find a different med. I would hesitate telling people to or to not take any drug based on someone else's side effects. I hope this med works for both of my children because ADD truly effects the entire family.
Guest
My son is 9 yrs old and has taken Concerta for 6 mo. He started on 18 mg (for 2 wks)then 27 mg (for 2 more wks) and now 36 mg is his effective dosage. He takes it after breakfast and eats a lot before bed. This drug has made a HUGE difference. I wish we had started it a yr earlier. He forgot his pill before school last wk and the teacher said he was a different child. She couldn't believe the difference. With his medication, he is able to focus, less agitated and more successful in school.
Brandy
My son is on Concerta 54mg. He is 9. It just does not seem to be doing any good. And since we uped it from36 to 54 mg he feels like he has things crawling on him and he is constantly picking at his head. He can not sit still in class and constantly has to be redirected. I really think maybe he was better on the 36mg. Has anyone elses children felt this way while on Concerta? He hasn't had any other of the side effects though.I feel so sorry for him because I know he cannot help it.
Highschool student
wow! i just started taking that dose yesterday. hmmm im scared about that i hope that wont happend
Guest
Hi...we too noticed that some days (happened in spans) that our son did better on the lower dose than the higher does. Not sure if there is a dosage issue or if it is exact in each capsule....but makes you wonder why we would see this happen.
Spence
Hi, I'm a senior in college and I have pretty severe ADHD. I have been on concerta for almost twelve years and I have never gone above the 36 miligram. I do see side effects of the medication, especially on my mood, I cannot imagine the effects it would have had on me at nine years old with a 54 mg!! That seems very extreme for a nine year old boy. Make sure the high dosage is not changing who his personality is, because these medications can easily do this. I hope you find a solution and I wish the best for your son =(

This is the first article I've read about Concerta and ADHD. It has certainly given me food for thought. I have a problem with my dextroamphetamine in that my Medicare Part D won't pay for my afternoon dose!
