When people feel addicted to something, they have a strong compulsion to engage in a certain behaviour.

When they don’t engage in the behaviour, they may feel withdrawal symptoms and feel “on edge”.

Addiction Examples

Common negative addictions include drug abuse, alcohol abuse, gambling addiction, smoking, Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD), overeating, as well as being addicted to feelings such as depression, anxiety or guilt. People seek addiction clinics and rehab centers such as AA meetings, usually with a low success rate.

What is Addiction – Definition

Addiction is a behaviour or stimuli someone repetitively engages in because it gives someone great pleasure or takes them away from great pain.

Scientifically speaking, an addiction stimulates the pleasure center of the brain through neurotransmitters such as dopamine and GABA.

In terms of human needs psychology, people become addicted to a behaviour when it meets 3 or more of their 6 Human Needs.

For example, overeating can fulfill someone’s needs for certainty (they know exactly how they will feel), uncertainty (the food is always different and/or the food changes their state), and love and connection (they connect with themselves when they eat a lot).

Destructive addictions can surface when someone is faced with a quality problem and they don’t feel like they can overcome it.

Safe problems, generally speaking lie within our control, such as abusing drugs, alcohol and gambling. Safe problems seem to be safe as they protect us from making a decision and possibly risking “failure”. However, in the long run safe problems can literally kill us mentally, emotionally and physically.
