Are you considering a new dental makeover? Over the last few years, several doubts have been expressed about the effectiveness and safety of the teeth whitening process. From one side of the scientific community however, different studies across a wide sector of the population have proved that the process is actually very effective and safe. On the other hand, different studies have identified risks that are dependent on the products and methodology that are being used. There seems to be a firm contention that the enamel of the teeth is not adversely affected if the whitening agent contains a very low percentage of carbamide peroxide. In the unlikely event of a higher than normal amount being present, this may prove harmful for the enamel layer on the teeth. This can however be counteracted by the fluoride content within the teeth whitening chemical formulation. All people do not witness the same when undergoing this process, as some tend to suffer from gum irritation or acute sensitivity. In that case, the recommendation is just to simply discontinue the regular usage of the teeth whitening product and rather only use it for a maximum of two or three days a week. It should also be stated that the teeth whitening industry is very competitive with a multitude of over-the-counter products being readily available. It is for this very reason that many dentists are complaining that their revenues are being negatively affected as potential patients tend to "do it themselves". The patients however do carry the risks in some instances of not applying the products correctly, and thus causing "self inflicted harm". As a direct consequence, some of the advertisements for "DIY" teeth whitening products strongly suggest that all potential users consult a dentist before attempting the procedure on their own. Are there any additional risks involved with teeth whitening? Yes most certainly, says the other part of the cosmetic dental community. They contend that this could include;
  • An ill-fitting mouthpiece tray which can lead directly to irritation of the softer mouth tissues. It must be admitted however that this conditions do not last for a long time and usually disappears about three days after the completion of the procedure.
  • The treatment may also make your teeth overtly sensitive. This usually only last for a short period of time, but can last for longer in extreme cases and for people suffering from undeclared or unknown allergies.
  • Eating food and /or drinking liquids that can increase or heighten the sensitivity. Very cold juices or drinks have reportedly made the teeth “feel funny” and affect the taste buds.
It is always recommended that you brush your teeth with toothpaste meant for sensitive teeth and containing potassium nitrate, as this assists to a great degree in soothing the nerve ends of the teeth. This practice must not be taken lightly as it will go a long way to alleviate some of the risks that go with teeth whitening. At the end of the day, your best choice is to follow the advice from the dentist.
