In our fast-paced and hectic world, the ability to be understood the first time you say it is imperative for your success. There is never enough time to accomplish what we need to do. Wasting both your time as well as that of your listeners is neither efficient nor profitable. To constantly repeat yourself so that others can understand what you are saying is demoralizing as well.
Today, society wants an answer fast. We have become impatient. What we were happy to receive at a future date a decade or two ago, we now insist on having at our fingertips this moment. It is called instant gratification. This is where clear, concise communication is imperative.
Case in point: there is a video tutorial about drop-down boxes in which I was unable to follow what the instructor was saying. His Asian accent was impossible to understand. I closed it off and found another video on another website. Unfortunately for the first company, they lost potential business from me because their message was not clear.
I love accents and do not advocate trying to get rid of them. My suggestion is learning to speak so that your words are understood the first time you say it. While this is good advice for those who are dealing with others over the phone, at the lectern, or at the head of the boardroom table, it is now just as important for computer video and webinars as well.
This issue does not just involve those in whom English is not their 1st language. What I find just as frustrating are the number of people in whom English is their native tongue and yet they are not speaking clearly or distinctly.
Case in point: there is a website in which two men often present brief videos regarding the correct means of writing and submitting articles. One of the men speaks clearly and is easy to follow. The other man, however, does not enunciate his words distinctly. I must concentrate a lot harder in order to catch what he is saying. In doing so, the meaning of his words is often lost because my concentration is more on understanding his words than his message.
If you want to communicate, then you need to be understood when you speak. Voice training can make a big difference in this respect. Start by recording yourself and studying the playback so that you can begin to recognize how others hear your words.
