40’s, a phase of life where you recently stepped from young adulthood. With the grace of 40 comes a list of problems too, common skin hitches such as wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation, splotches, and dryness; dealing with peri-menopausal years without preparation is like fighting on a battlefield without a weapon.
The main reason behind most of these age specific problems of 40’s is the decline in estrogen levels. Estrogen, the primary hormone which is responsible for normal body functions including skin. Estrogen aids in collagen proliferation, dermal thickness and elasticity, and restoration of youthful moisture. But it declines as you age which paved a path for many skin related issues.
It is hard or even impossible to overcome this drop of estrogen levels with age but there are some effective ways to still look youthful and free of any signs of aging no matter what you age.
Women in their 40’s are likely to notice sagging and loosening of skin around the most delicate eye area in addition to already existing problems of dryness, puffy eyes, dark circles and under eye bags. So, ladies it’s high time to start using eye cream if you haven’t begun already as part of your skin care regimen. An eye cream can really help for the cause; follow it religiously every night before bed.
Some dedicated time twice every day for this important skin care ritual is the least thing you can offer your skin. Pampering moments for your skin free of any makeup is must to thoroughly clean your skin from deep inside. For women in their 40’s preferably a gentle milky or creamy cleanser is a better option as gel or foamy products are harsh on skin and strip the skin off dampness. While cleansing, use a gentle cleansing brush to slough off dead skin cells.
Dryness is one of the worst nightmares of age 40. And not to further aggravate dryness, a good quality sunscreen is the most basic and crucial investment. Sunscreen will help safeguard collagen as well as fend off age spots.
Use sunscreen with UVA, UVB and infrared protection, a wide spectrum sunscreen product. Opt for the one with thicker, creamier versions with antioxidants to help reverse the damage done. Apply it once daily.
Vitamin C Serum
Investment on a product like a vitamin C serum is not a bad deal at all especially at this part of age. Vitamin C serum not only helps fight free radicals but also helps lighten age spots, and blotches. Make a habit of applying it once daily before putting on your sunscreen for a glowing even skin.
Retinol, a potent derivative of vitamin A is the key ingredient in most anti-aging products for the reason being its drastic effects on cell turnover. In simple words, retinol prompts surface skin cells to turn over, hence leading the path for cell renewal. Retinol also helps increase skin’s thickness and elasticity, minimize the appearance of wrinkles, slow the breakdown of collagen, and lighten age spots caused by sun exposure. Dermatologists recommend to use retinoid products much earlier but if you’re in your 40’s it’s high time to bring it to your skin care routine.
After cleansing your skin both in the morning and before hitting bed putting on moisturizer is worth doing as it adds a protective, barrier layer against the skin.
Look for a moisturizer with antioxidants, particularly A and C, to fight off free radicals, and peptides to stimulate new collagen growth. As Peptides are very potent anti-aging agent they really help tighten skin and in remodeling entire skin structure.
Also look for a product that has glycerin or hyaluronic acid to help your skin retain moisture. Hyaluronic acid which is also part of our skin is a hydrating agent but as we age it starts getting deficient. Using products with hyaluronic acid is the best way to overcome the deficit.
