Amlodipine is a long-acting calcium channel blocker used as an anti-hypertensive and as the treatment of angina. Amlodipine acts by relaxing the smooth muscle in the arterial wall, decreasing total peripheral resistance and hence reducing blood pressure in angina it increases blood flow to the heart muscle.

The drug in qusetion which in Amlodipine, acts by relaxing the smooth muscles which are present in the arterial wall of the heart, which eases the severe chest pain. The contraction of the heart muscles depends upon the movement of extra-cellular calcium ions into the cells present in the smooth heart muscles, Amlodipine acts by selectively allowing the calcium ions into the arterial walls and therefore easing the chest pain by maintaining smooth heart contraction.

This medicine can be obtained via a prescription and there are some minor side-effects reported while consuming this specific drug. They can be charcterized by their frequency in which they affect the patients :

Very Often - Fatigue, peripheral edema.

Often - dizziness, palpitations, muscle stomach or headache, dyspepsia, nausea.

Sometimes - blood disorders, development of breasts in men (gynecomastia), impotence, depression, insomnia, tachycardia, gingival enlargement - in 1 in 1,000 users,

Rarely - erratic behavior, hepatitis, jaundice - in 1 in 10,000 users

Very rarely - hyperglycemia, tremor, Stevens–Johnson syndrome - in 1 in 100,000 users

If the dosage of this specific drug increased in patients with severe heart disease it can result in increasing heart problems and can also cause heart attack in very rare occasions.

Excessive lowering of blood pressure during initiation of amlodipine treatment can occur, especially in patients already taking another medication for lowering blood pressure. In rare instances, congestive heart failure has been associated with amlodipine, usually in patients already on a beta blocker.
