Do you even know what an Active Vacation is? Let’s just say it’s the opposite of sitting on the beach with a book in one hand and an umbrella drink in the other. Not that this isn’t desirable at times, but more and more boomers want more action than that.

Assuming you are a health-minded women, this type of vacation might be right up your alley! Have you ever thought of a Yoga Retreat or a bike ride through France (or Iowa)? What about hiking the Grand Canyon?

Not only does your body get a good workout but so do your mind and even your soul. Living a healthy lifestyle is important and desired if you wish to lead a long life being as healthy as possible. Why just save this for the weekend? Imagine the wonderful vacations you could plan for yourself and feel truly great about promoting healthy habits while having a blast.

You could plan this type of vacation on your own, but there may be a better option for you. More and more, companies are catering to baby boomers and not just the ‘twenty and thirty some-things.’ Simply type ‘fitness vacations for baby boomers’ or something similar into your favorite search engine and do a search. You will be amazed with all there is available. These are ready-made vacations! All you have to do is show up and they take care of the rest. Just think about how many hours this would save you in planning time!

Please do your homework before you jump right in. Here are some thoughts on what to look for when you are doing your research:

• Cost: These types of vacations may tend to get a bit pricey depending on what you are looking for. Don’t forget to check out Elderhostel. They have expanded their trip itineraries and have a wonderful reputation for solid trips at reasonable prices.
• Credentials: Depending on the type of trip you are planning and the activities, be sure everyone is licensed and insured as well as certified when necessary (i.e. scuba diving). Also, don’t forget the basics with knowledge of first aid and CPR training.
• References: If you are looking at a program that is unfamiliar to you, be sure you ask them good questions. Some thoughts would be: How long have you been in business? What are the facilities like? There should be pictures on their website. How much do you have to pay upfront? What are their cancellation policies? Are there testimonials?
• Restrictions or Rules: Can you bring pets? Children? Are there TV’s, radios or phones?

There is certainly nothing wrong with beaches and umbrella drinks but if you are looking for some healthy adventure, you will be pleased to find how much is available! Taking an Active Vacation may just be what you’ve been looking for! Enjoy!
