Today’s tech world is thick with a number of tech-giants. Many came and went, but only the one that rendered quality survived the technology battle field, and has been still making a niche in the tech-arena. Palm Inc has been the godfather of this field but when RIM (Research in motion) was brought to selves it created a multibillion dollar industry that was not known to the world earlier. Though Microsoft did keep the space grabbed consistently, few of its poor device usability led it to failure, and compelled to enforce the desktop paradigm on mobile devices.

However, when Apple & Google came up with their smartphones and built an application system specifically for the mobile experience, the desktop paradigm on mobile devices by Microsoft was broken. And as soon as the smartphones were found in the pockets of teenagers, Apple rolled out the idea of App Store.

Today’s mobile arena is awash with four operating systems such as:

1. Microsoft Windows Mobile
2. BlackBerry’s OS (BBOS)
3. Google’s Android
4. Apple iOS

In a marketing and sales sense, the customer value linked to a mobile device is the product of the devices:

• Extensibility (applications, accessories, etc)
• Vanity/value (cost, 3rd party perception, etc)
• Functionality (cameras, mp3 player, etc)
• Technical specifications (hardware)
• Usability (ease of use/adoption)
• Industrial design (beauty)

All these operating systems have grabbed the mobile market so tightly that it is very hard for any new vendor to survive. So, if tech-firms like Amazon (AMZN), Facebook, LinkedIn (LNKD), or any other tech firm making plans to come up with a smartphone, the products must be evaluated, as per the above mentioned. In case a new mobile platform is released by any of these firms, it is sure that they would be ostracizing the development community. In the absence of development community, they will not be having any extension value and thus offer a lower product value to consumers.

It seems as if history is repeating itself from the desktop OS market. Google Android can be the Microsoft Windows of the mobile arena, due to its usable interface & device agnosticism, while Apple iOS can maintain control of the niche market it at present controls through Mac OSX and BlackBerry OS can follow the path of Novell’s (NOVL) NetWare.
