Alzheimer's can be a devastating disease which affects not only the person suffering from it but also his or her entire family. This is something I know from personal experience, having seen a family member waste away from the disease. But what is the cause of Alzheimer's? There are a lot of theories floating around, some with a scientific basis, some not. Let me try to clear up some of the confusion.

Some theorize that Alzheimer's is caused by toxins enter the brain and causing damage. The main culprit that has been cited is aluminum. Aluminum can be found in cosmetics, antiperspirants and vaccines. It can also be found as a contaminant in our food. Others theorize that Alzheimer's is purely a genetic disease. I believe that the truth lies somewhere in the middle. There is a genetic component to Alzheimer's which can be turned on and off depending on our diet level of toxicity.

There is a gene called the APOE4 gene, which has definitely been conclusively linked to Alzheimer's. While 15% of the general population has this gene, 50% to Alzheimer's patients do. But what the newest research has shown, as is usually the case with the genetic theory of disease, is that this gene can be affected by diet.

A brand-new study done by Prof. Daniel Michaelson at the University of Tel Aviv's Department of Neurobiology has found that diets high in the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA, also known as the omega three fatty acids, can reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer's in mice.

"The main take-away message here is that good diets can alleviate the effects of bad genes. Of course nutritionists have had this general idea for a while, but it's nice to be able to show that this approach can be applied to specifically counteract the negative effects of Alzheimer's disease-related genes," the professor was quoted as saying.

For this reason, I believe that our risk of getting Alzheimer's is at least partially under our own control. By taking a concentrated fish oil supplement every day, and making sure that is a potent and clean supplement, we can decrease our risk of getting Alzheimer's and many other diseases as well.

The finding that concentrated fish oil prevents alzheimer's is very important, because it is something that we can all apply in our own lives at minimal cost to ourselves. The most important thing to remember is to find a pure, concentrated fish oil supplement in capsule form, one that is free of contaminants and potent in its effect.

Other things that have been shown to decrease the Alzheimer's risk are exercising and drinking organic green tea on a daily basis. Based on the current available research, doing these things could drop our risk of Alzheimer's by two thirds or more. And all this can be done very inexpensively. I believe that is a no-brainer decision.
