Are you concerned with the image you project? If you are like most people, your answer is probably ‘Yes.’ When you hear yourself on your voicemail, answering machine, or some other type of recording equipment, can you appreciate that that sound is part of the image you are projecting?

Most people, in hearing their recorded voice, may dislike what they hear but they quickly forget it. If image matters to you, don’t forget it because that sound which you may find embarrassing, revolting or humiliating is saying a lot about you. Bear in mind, the voice you hear in your head is not the sound by which everyone else recognizes you. They know you by how you sound on the recording equipment.

The good news, however, is that you have a better voice inside. I call it your ‘real’ voice and it is deeper in pitch, warmer in quality, and more mature-sounding. Your ‘real’ voice will not make you sound too young or too old because it is ageless. If you were to hear my voice and hadn’t seen my picture, you would not be able to place an age on me. I could be 25 or 75 (or anywhere in the middle). And, because I am speaking with my ‘real’ voice, I will never sound like an old woman even when I am in my 80’s.

By taking the pressure, the stress, the wear and tear off your vocal folds (cords) when you discover your ‘real’ voice, you will find it continually improving with age when nothing else on your body is!

In order to discover your ‘real’ voice, you will need to do 3 things:

1. Learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm;
2. Find the optimum pitch of your speaking voice; and,
3. Use your chest cavity as your primary sounding board instead of your throat.

Once you accomplish these 3 steps, make it a habit and you won’t have to think about it ever again. All you will need to do is listen as it improves with age – a little like a good bottle of red wine!

If you care about the image you project, consider what your speaking voice is saying about you. Only one voice matters – yours. Find your ‘real’ one and you will be amazed at the difference in how others ‘look’ at you!
