Entrepreneurs today, choosing a co-founder and working from home
Written by Javier Gonzalez
Today more than ever entrepreneurs begin their first steps at home, taking advantage of the incredible possibilities that technology offers us these days.
What traditionally were areas that needed the specialized contribution of specific individuals or groups (such as marketing, distribution and others), today can become just another layer of efforts in the many tasks that the entrepreneur performs through the many online channels at his/her disposal.
Traditionally if you had an idea, you would build a prototype and then find support to take the idea to market, do marketing, distribution and continue expanding the product. Today you still need those layers of support, but you can begin their initial stages from your home itself, because so many marketing, distribution and business channels are right there at your fingertips.
This can also mean that at the beginning the work of a founder entrepreneur can become more isolated. That’s why having a co-founder is always a great help. A co-founder partner will help taking the pressure off your shoulders from time to time, brainstorming ideas and generally supporting you during the inevitable difficult moments that happen in every creative venture.
Choosing a co-founder partner is also one of the most delicate tasks for an entrepreneur. The wrong choice may become the end of the project. In fact, statistics show that a large percentage of the startup companies that fail, do so because of conflicts that take place between their co-founders.
Therefore having a co-founder has great and many benefits but also a few dangers. Your choice has to be motivated not by friendship, but by a very clear understanding of what is the role and the objectives of each of you as you start to work together
Like every relationship between two human beings, the one between founder and co-founder is not an easy one and it has to be taken care of regularly, making sure that any conflicts that start to arise are addressed as quickly and promptly as possible.
The key advice is to discuss and reach a clear understanding before you start working together. Most of the conflicts that arise later happen because the conditions were not set clear enough at the beginning.
Sit down with your co-founder partner. Review every single consideration that comes to any of your minds. Try to think of as many possibilities and choices that you may have to face together in the future and make sure that each one of you is comfortable with the possible avenues that may open in front of you.
Of course it is impossible to predict how things will go so this is just an attempt to increase the chances of things going well in the future. If the relationship begins well and with a clear understanding, there will be more chances for it to succeed in the future.
Like everything in life, it is more fun to create when you do it with the right company. Take your time to explore the possibilities and choose a partner for your business that gives you the right challenges and support, always growing with you in the pursuit of the common goal.
