Homecoming in Southwestern College
It’s a tradition whereby the alumni of a school are welcomed back. This is widely practiced in many colleges, universities and high schools in United States. It includes activities like sports and culture events for the students and the alumni. Also, in the activities there is a procession throughout the streets of the city.
Its origin in the United States is associated with the alumni soccer games which were held at colleges since early 19th century. The event revolves around a central event such as a ceremony and also a game. The most preferred on is a football game played on the field. It also has a parade featuring the school’s band and a sport’s team. Also included is a procession for the homecoming queen or king. Immediately after the game, a dance follows. The game played should be an easy win hence it’s considered that a weaker team plays with the opponents.
In Southwestern College, the event has been celebrated since April 1909. The event is usually celebrated every year. It’s usually a good way interacting with the alumni as they share out the different experiences in the corporate world. The event has a gallery that stores all that happens through photos as a reminder to them about the celebration.
The homecoming celebration consists of a representative group of students called the Homecoming court. In it are the king, queen, princes and princess. This depends on the gender basis of the institution. Some schools tend to join so that they can select a court together. The king and queen should be those students completing their studies while the prince and princess can be the lower classes. The nominations made depend on the students’ contribution to the school and then voting is done to limit the contestants. There are rules that are outlined to govern the process though it’s locally drawn. The announcements for the chosen king and queen are done in the assembly. The previous years’ queen and king have to be invited to crown the freshly elected ones. Something amusing in Southwestern is that, they parade a queen who is male but dressed like a woman. It is done to bring dignity to the procession. They decorate the halls and rooms used in the campus for them to appear attractive. This is their most important activity because they don’t have a football team always. All these together with their members are expected to work together to grace the event.
The parade organized usually showcases different talents of the students. It creates humor and shows a sense of creativity. Other things that are displayed are the different designs of advancement in technology by the tech-groups.
In this university, the alumni students participate in the event whereby they raise funds, provide homes, prepare and serve barbecue supper together with decorating the buildings in the adjacent town. For the senior class, their work is to wipe the dining tables. It is done to ensure that everyone takes part in an activity as a show of unity and teamwork
Homecoming is viewed as a special time in the colleges because it extends the family and community aspect to the colleges, the streets and the playing field. Just like how people come together in the society for a thanksgiving or other activities, homecoming is also done to welcome back the alumni. They come to share their experiences since they left campus and also to bond with the students. It was designed with the objective of restoring the college spirit and reminded every one of the values acquired in the college. To the students it has a different meaning to that of the alumni because theirs is only a reminder of their former days in campus.
