Autos were his very first love, nevertheless Soichiro Honda's destiny was to develop the motorcycle that bore his name. He started out mastering the mechanical aspect of automobiles while still a teeenager, working in a repair shop, and he loved racing and fast driving. He got lots of experience with riding motorcycles, because he owned both an Indian, and a Harley.
Even though he already owned an auto repair shop in 1928, it was only in 1948, when he was 41 years old, that Soichiro Honda started the Honda Motor Company. He needed well-made products that could very well compete, so his concentration was on design and quality. In 1953 Japan was experiencing a depression, and, although sales of motorcycles were on the up, the existence of his company was in jeopardy. A small volume of motorcycles were selling, and since he just didn't want to put people out of work, he kept the factory open. The perception of this decision was borne out in 1958, by the launch of what became the most successful motorcycle in the world, the C100 Super Cub. The bike was versatile as well as inexpensive, within anybody's reach, driven by a 4-stroke motor with a 3-speed transmission.
People new to motorcycles found it easy to use, and it soon found a big following amongst women commuters. By 1959, on account of this bike, the largest maker of motorcycles was Honda. At this point they chose to set their sights on the entire world. They felt that the USA was the key market to seize at the outset. Approval by the American consumer would indicate acceptance by the rest of the world. Honda had been first offered to the American public in June, 1959, in Los Angeles, and by 1960 a person could buy a Honda from any of more than 75 stores.
By making accessible half the financing for two important organizations, Honda exhibited their commitment to the community and won a huge amount of public trust for their company. Those with a passion for motorcycling recognised and appreciated the value of these organizations, namely the Motorcycle Industry Council and the Motorcycle Safety Council. People kept advocating Honda to be the number one motorcycle manufacturer during the seventies, as they continued developing new bikes which proved irresistible. They were rapidly thought to be the speediest bikes in the world, flowing from their winning of over 70 global races in 1973. The innovative GL1000 Gold Wing was launched in 1975, making touring bikes comfortable and stylish, and the idea was hurriedly emulated by Honda's rivals.
Countries world wide remain enthralled as Honda keeps producing motorcycles with their trademark appeal. Part of their excellent image stems from their continued practice of donating motorcycles to causes that they regard as worth supporting. Honda still encourage biking safety through the classes they sponsor and by helping bikers have access to the most up-to-date information available. For many decades they have proven their motorcycles to be probably the most reliable of those manufactured. They have become legendary rulers in the motorcycle industry, in no small part because of their willingness to innovate irrespective of the circumstances.
