The creative flow of God comes most often as a spontaneous thought, pictures, emotions, music, etc. which lights upon one’s mind and heart. Spontaneity is key and is a right-brained function. This is in stark contrast to analysis, which is left-brained function. It’s the shifting away from analysis to intution.
Many artists are naturally right-brained people making it easier for them to access the right-brain, but God’s creative flow is not limited to just the more naturally right-brained among us, it just may take more effort and intentionality for the more left-brained people to access it. Making the shift from the analytical mind to the intuitive mind can be done by anyone, and even for the most right-brained people it can still be helpful to follow a few steps to capture the creative flow of God.
The Four Steps
The first step is to quiet yourself down. Remove yourself from the everyday distractions both physically (going some place quiet) and mentally (quieting your mind). Then look for vision. As we see in Revelation as John pictures a door in Heaven and then is immediately in the Spirit and begins seeing a vision. We then allow God’s creative flow (whether vision, music, painting, etc) to flow through us. Finally, by recording or journalling we can allow that flow to continue unabated.
Examples in History
We see countless examples through history of people capturing the flow of God and it leading to amazing things. John (above) is one example. Another is Einstein, who describes discovering the Theory of Relativity. He tells that he was lying on his back in a grassy field, looking through half-closed eyes and wondering what it would be like to ride on a ray of sunlight. Intuitively, the theory of relativity came to him. He went back to his office and proved it with mathematical formulas.
What Is the Point?
It is God’s passion that His children experience His love and are restored to Him. And it is to this end that God’s creative flow works. The ultimate goal of Christian arts which God works through His children is to portray and release God’s love and creative blessing to all people.
So, if you are a Christian artist and are struggling to find your creativity. Take a moment to stop, quiet yourself, ask the Holy Spirit to flow through you, begin to picture images in your mind, and then let the Holy Spirit flow through you with the creativity that can only come from God.
