Hunger Pangs and How to Handle Them Healthily
Written by Harshad Jethra
Through the nutrition we get, the body gets used to a certain energy level. When we go on a diet, we tend to eat too little food.
Now the strategy is likely to backfire. Over time, the body would send starvation signals to the brain. One then tends raid the fridge at midnight. This may at times be unhealthy eating and may result in a few added pounds around the waist.
Is it possible to beat these hunger pangs? Let's take a look at some ways that help you manage hunger pangs healthily.
1. GO FOR A HEARTY BREAKFAST
Breakfast happens to be the most important meal for the day. It provides you with energy at the time you need it the most. If you skip breakfast, you might find yourself binging later in the day. As a rule, hunger pangs set in post 12 to 24 hours of last ingestion of food. Young people have more severe hunger pangs because they are likely to have more muscle mass.
2. KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED THROUGHOUT THE DAY
One must try and make sure that one consumes at least eight glasses of water in a day. This is important, because the body may sometimes confuse thirst with hunger pangs.
3. A MEAL HIGH IN SPICES
One of the ways of controlling hunger pangs is making sure that the brain receives full signal. If you make sure that you cook a spicy meal, the brain receives the full signal with ease. So, one must always make sure that a meal is rich in spicy aromas. For the same, you could add ginger, cayenne, turmeric or chili powder to your meals.
4. KEEP A CHECK ON YOUR SUGAR INTAKE
One of the ways of making sure that your sugar intake is in check is by making sure that one does not go for high sugar foods by themselves, every now and then. When you must go for high sugar foods, make sure that you do so as a part of an entire meal. As per a research conducted by the University of Florida, upon consuming high fructose corn syrup, the communication between one's digestive tract and the brain's fullness centre is interrupted.
Corn syrup, honey, maltose, corn sweeteners are just some of the substitutes of sugar.
5. GET SOME REGULAR EXERCISE
When one gets some exercise regularly, it helps regulate appetite and keep hunger pangs under check.
6. A STRATEGY FOR SNACKING!
A way of managing hunger is to reduce binging with snacking. One of the ways to go about it is to make sure that you consume a few low calorie snacks in a day. Some of the best variants in this regard are fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and low fat dairy products. Servings made using these variants are likely to comprise of up to 100 calories.
7. EATING SLOWLY
If one eats slowly, it results in a higher sense of fullness and may work towards reducing hunger pangs.
8. DO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IF REQUIRED
If even after consuming your meal, you feel constantly hungry, you must feel free to consult your practitioner over the matter. The pain may be caused due to a disorder in the gastrointestinal tract. This may be diagnosed and treated with an immediate effect.
