Everything is reliant on memory recall and this is definitely true with lucid dreaming. Having the ability to recollect your dreams is important if you desire to find out how to dream lucidly. Until you have exceptional dream recollection, you will not stand a great deal of hope of having, that much if any, lucid dreams.
The two reasons for this are that first, even if you do manage to have a lucid dream you will not be able to remember it. The thing is people dream all the time and a lot of people have probably have had many lucid dreams but because of a hectic life style most dreams are blocked out. And the second reason is good dream recollection is necessary because if you want to have lucid dreams you need to recognise that your dream is a dream, while it's happening. Since they're your dreams that you're undertaking to identify, you have to get accustomed with what they're like.
Keep a dream diary.
So the first thing you must do to be able to have excellent dream recall is getting yourself a dream diary so you can record your dreams first thing on waking up. You will find that after a few days of writing down your dreams that you will be able to recall many of them. Also make sure you have satisfactory sleep every night. If you are refreshed, you will find it is a lot easier to centre on your aim of recalling dreams. Also you won't mind waking up in the middle of the night so much, to write them down.
The whole idea of remembering your dreams is so that you can later wake yourself up while you are dreaming. Once you can wake yourself up in your dream you will then be able to control your dream. That is why you should read your dream diary every day so that you can become accustomed to the dream like state and recognize them occurring. As soon as you start to remember your dreams you can then start to analyse them to see if there is any specific meaning in them for you. Remember the symbolism that you get in your dream will mean something to you. Basically everyone has a different meaning for whatever symbol they see in their own dream. Good Luck.
