Why is it individuals react differently to the same stressful event? Well it’s because they have been programmed differently in the way they unconsciously interpret the significance of such events. Is it possible to alter this programming and therefore permanently reduce one’s sensitivity to external stressful events? Absolutely!
Although the susceptibility to stress is believed to reside in the intensity of the external event this is actually untrue. In fact it is entirely based on a person’s sensitivity or resilience to the event. The sensitivity is based on how the event in question is interpreted unconsciously and this is based on how they have been conditioned or programmed to view external events in early life.
For instance let’s assume that a person learns that they have just been fired from their job and unconsciously they interpret this as a threat to their survival. Such an interpretation might be based on an early life memory of abandonment or rejection that left them feeling helpless, alone, afraid, vulnerable etc.
The memory itself exists in the person’s unconscious mind as what I call an “emotional landmine” that is triggered to “go off” whenever a similar event of rejection or abandonment occurs in their current life. The example of being fired is one such example. It triggers the older memory with all of its negative feelings to erupt into consciousness and it is this “eruption” that is experienced as what many refer to as the stress reaction.
When many negative memories of a similar theme exist unconsciously they tend to get triggered simultaneously thereby creating a more powerful stress reaction that can debilitate the person in question. So what is being said here is that the sensitivity to stress is based on the number and intensity of those old negative memories living unconsciously.
Until recently very little could be done about those memories. Over 10 years ago a new coaching process was developed that can permanently and completely erase/diffuse those memories thereby helping to make an individual supremely resilient to almost any “stressful” event.
What this also implies is that any new negative event will fail to penetrate that person’s unconscious mind. That is, by definition, what having resilience means.
