If you love building, then you may want to consider starting your own construction company. According to the National Home Builders Association, builders collect an average of $16.2 million in gross profits, and they get to put about 6.4 percent of that money in their own pockets. If you are thinking of opening your own construction company, then consider these tips:

Ponder the Best Equipment Sources

While builders will typically need their own hammers, screwdrivers and other tools, there are many tools that builders can rent. There are several advantages to renting equipment including the fact that the builder does not have to make time and have the expense of caring for the equipment. The builder can also benefit from not having to store equipment that they are only going to use occasionally. In fact, it is usually cheaper to rent equipment and outsource to services that provide scaffolding equipment or whatever you may need than to buy it over the long run.

Network

Spend some time networking with those in related fields as you get ready to open your construction business. Make a list of plumbers, real estate agents, bankers and other professionals who may deal with people interested in construction. Then, let those people know that you are ready to do business. When they refer someone to you, make sure that you thank them.

Bid Reasonably

One of the hardest skills for many builders to learn is how to bid a job so that they get enough for their time and supplies while winning contracts. There are many software programs that can help you estimate costs and figure your profit margin. Using these programs often cuts down on the time it takes to bid a job, and it may increase the number of bids that you win. Some will even help you write your bid making you look more professional and trustworthy.

Get Permits and Insurance

Before you start your first building job, check with your local government to see what permits you need to operate. You may also want to talk to a lawyer to see if you need to open a business account with the state. Depending on how you structure your business, doing so may protect you from personal liability if trouble happens. You also will need to get business insurance including a worker’s compensation policy in most states. Many builders recommend an umbrella policy to cover the things that you have not yet considered but that can go wrong.

If you are a talented builder, then there are lots of opportunities to open your own construction business. Use these ideas to get you thinking about how to structure your building company for many years of success.
