One of the ways to improve marital communication is to communicate with your spouse using words that affirm and build up your spouse. The bible says that the power of life and death is in the tongue, this means that our words can either build or destroy.

Use the power in your tongue to build up your husband or wife. Use your words to compliment and appreciate your husband or wife, this is an excellent way to effectively communicate your love for your spouse.

Using affirmation in communication is saying things like:
“You look lovely in that dress”
“Wow! Your hair looks beautiful”
“That meal you cooked tonight was delicious”
“I really appreciate you being in my life, I wouldn’t want to be with anyone else”

Statements like these are very powerful, when you say things like this to your spouse, it will make them feel loved, cared for, and appreciated, and when your spouse feels like that towards you, you will have a better chance at getting them to meet your needs because you have created an atmosphere of love and love always wants to give back.

Encouragement
You can also improve marital communication by using words that encourage your spouse. Without a doubt no matter how confident we all seem on the exterior, we all have our areas of insecurities. Your spouse might come across as strong and as someone that doesn’t really need your encouragement but believe me, everybody needs encouragement especially those that come across like they don’t need it, that strong façade is usually a cover up for the insecurities they might feel inside.

Use your words to inspire your spouse, encourage them to maximize their potential, encourage your spouse to go for their dreams, use your words to let your spouse know that you believe in them and that you believe in their potential, and that you believe that they can achieve anything they put their mind to.
