In the aftermath of quite a few near death experiences, the person gets cured of almost impossible medical conditions much to the amazement of the hospital staff. We look into some case studies and the possible inferences from them in this presentation.

There are many aspects of near death experiences (NDEs) that are wonderful to the point of our getting a glimpse of what lies beyond the apparent. Some of them take us to the region of amazement because the rational mind has no explanation to offer regarding the developments following the experience. One such is the fact that the near death experiencer gets cured of the serious medical condition that gave the person only a few hours or days to live just before the person had the experience.

In most cases of NDE, the person first has an out of body experience and feels completely relieved from the suffering and pain due to the bad shape the body is in. Subsequently, they contact the Divine Light or a deceased relative. In some cases, the person is told that if he (or she) chose to return, he would be cured of the damage done to the body by an accident or illness, no matter how bad it is, and he would return to healthy life. Such people amaze the doctors and their relatives by the incredible recovery they make. The reader is directed to nderf.org for the full details of the first example given here.

A recent case study: Anita Moorjani, A Sindhi woman from India, was born in Singapore but her family moved to Hong Kong early in her childhood. She was diagnosed in April 2002 with cancer of a virulent type. After nearly 4 years of battling the disease, she was taken to a local hospital with a number of organs already in the dysfunctional stage. Her family was told that she had less than 36 hours to live. Anita’s remarkable NDE and her miraculous recovery from cancer has created enormous interest on an international scale. The following is a small excerpt from her elaborate narration given during her interview with the Near Death Experience Research Foundation (nderf.org).

“This state [the NDE] caused a huge internal consciousness shift within me. It felt as if I had penetrated into a reality beyond my “mind” and that, living in the mind was living in the “illusion”. There was a feeling of being connected to the entire universe- becoming one with everyone and everything. I was also flooded in an all-encompassing, unconditionally loving energy - an energy that does not discriminate or judge. It was in this very awake state that I made the decision to come back into life.”

Anita says that she was presented with the choice and that she was conscious of making the decision to return to life. And as soon as she made the decision, every single cell in her body responded to that decision, and she healed almost immediately. The doctors continued to take tests after her NDE, but could not find anything abnormal.

Anita feels that her higher self/soul/spirit, whatever one may call it, that part of her had decided to continue to live through the damaged body and cure it; nothing in this physical 3D world could have interfered with that decision. Within four days of her returning, about 70% of the tumors had gone; they couldn’t even find them to the touch. She was still very weak. Over the following days the biopsies were carried out. They took the scans but couldn’t find even a trace of cancer in her body. Needless to say that the doctors had no explanation and could only put it down to an incredible miracle.

Three other studies are reported by the renowned researcher PMH Atwater in her book “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Near Death Experiences”. A young man diagnosed with advanced AIDS had a sudden drop in his HIV readings after his NDE. One year later, he was totally normal. The brain tumor that “killed” Mellon-Thomas Benedict was absent from brain scans taken shortly after he revived – and never reappeared. Muriel Kelly’s childhood NDE healed the damage done to her heart by rheumatic fever.

Many more such cases have been reported in the studies on NDE. All those go to show that the merely rational mind is too petty to understand the profundity of the phenomenon. Further, such case histories urge us to listen to the messages from people who go through this paranormal experience. People, who neither believe nor disbelieve but are willing to explore open-mindedly into the esoteric nature of NDEs, would find their perspectives expand to the point of bringing in a non-verbal understanding of life and the afterlife. Those transformations augment meaningful and wholesome living.
