A decision to install an in-ground pool is a big investment. When properly planned and maintained, a pool is an asset adding value to your property. The dig is the maintenance and energy costs associated with a pool. In the last decade, advances in pool heating systems have made owning and operating a residential pool more affordable. More Australians are enjoying their pools year round thanks to modern pool heating systems.
Types of Pool Heating Systems
There are three main types of systems used to heat pools:
1. Gas fuelled
2. Solar pool heating systems
3. Heat pumps
Gas fuelled pool heaters are best for heating pools or spas for short periods of time. They are also great for heating up the water quickly. This is great when you have guests over for a party or at the country home where you don’t keep the pool warm on a regular basis. The downside of installing a propane or natural gas pool heating system is that they are expensive to operate, tend to be noisy and smelly.
Solar pool heaters are ideal for people who prefer pool temperatures comfortable, but not warm. These keep pools at a steady temperature around 27 degrees Celsius. These units are absolutely environmentally friendly, quiet and free of noxious fumes. The down side to solar pool heating systems is that they are dependent on the sun. Your pool will need to be situated in an area that is in the sun at least 4-6 hours a day. Solar systems with less than 4 hours of direct sun will not provide sufficient heat to maintain the pool temperatures at a comfortable level.
For people who depend on swimming for basic fitness or to support their athletic training program, people who want to swim year round regardless of the outside temperature, then a Heat Pump pool heating system is the best choice. When properly sized, a heat pump will heat up the water in a newly installed pool to 27 degrees Celsius in less than 48 hours and maintain a comfortable pool temperature between 27 and 32 degrees Celsius all day and night regardless of outside weather conditions.
Heat pump pool heating systems provide low energy, enviro-friendly pool heating all year. These are electric systems and do cost more than the gas fuelled systems. However, heat pumps provide tremendous savings in energy costs when compared to propane or gas pool heating units.
Now you have a basic idea of considerations when evaluating pool heating systems. Find out how you can get a system that is 600% more energy efficient than other systems.
