Can our mind alter our gut flora?

Since coming into the spotlight, psychobiotics have caused rivers of ink to flow. The term "psychobiotics" was coined at the end of October by Ted Dinan Professor of Psychiatry, University College Cork, Ireland and his colleagues from the Department of Psychiatry at the university.

According to this work published in the Society of Biological Psychiatry journal, a psychobioticis is: "A living organism that, when ingested in the adequate quantities, benefits the health of patients with psychiatric illnesses".

An ongoing research since 2013 focuses on the role of the microbiota (gut flora) in social behavior, corroborated in recent studies in experimental animals. (Desbonnet L et al., Mol Psychiatry. 2013).

In a paper published in April 2013 in the first issue of the Journal of Probiotics and Health magazine (West R et al.), conducted on a total of 33 children and teenagers with autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs) who throughout the investigation received over a period of 6 months a blend of 5 probiotic strains (Delpro®), it was noted that, in addition to a lessening of the digestive symptomatology on those patients, there was a visible improvement in the behavioral items of the ATEC scale, an assessment scale that measures the severity of the autism. It is in this scale where parameters like language, sociability, learning and behavior are measured.

These theories and studies usher and give rise to a new spin on how microorganisms in the microbiota (gut flora) affect our emotions..

Recently a group of experts on probiotics and the fields of biology and microbiology from the Healthy Help Corporation company I+D+I department led by D. Jose Antonio Sánchez has coined the term Psychodysbiosis to submit a paper which focuses on how emotions affect our microbiota, in other words the inverse process. Then, can our emotions influence the microorganisms which inhabit our insides...

To this question, D. Jose Antonio Sánchez answers us with a very simple example:

"A very basic example is the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a pathology which intensifies because of emotional instability as well as dietary habits, thus we can observe that the cause may be in the microbiota or the emotions"

"Another example is the spastic constipation commonly associated with emotional problems and that clearly establishes intestinal dysbiosis, not included in the ICD: International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, however since 2014 in the US National Library of Medicine new descriptors have appeared. Then, if a dysbiosis can be emotional we will have to start using the term Psychodysbiosis"

Since 2010 very homogeneous research has been done with regard to IBS, in adults and children. Moayyedi's excellent meta-analysis emphasizes that probiotics, have been effective, although there still remains to be specified which strains are most effective.

Based on this new concept and the research done by the Healthy Help Corporation led by D. Jose Antonio Sánchez a conference will be taught at 19.30 this Saturday, 3rd December, at the IV Integrative Medicine Conference (IV Congreso de Medicina Integrativa) taking place at the Ciudad de Vigo Hotel in Vigo, Pontevedra.

The conference will be taught by D. Jose Antonio Sánchez himself, author of the book: Clean your intestines of shit (Limpia tu intestino de mierda) in which this term was coined since 2015 and during his presentation he will expound on the connection between brain/mind and microbiota (gut flora). The concepts of Intestinal Psychodysbiosis and Psychobiotics, will be without a doubt a new paradigm which we will be hearing about a lot in the intestinal health world
