“. . . having your command on the English Language means that you will be a more transferable resource. You will get the opportunity to move out of your country if ever there is a reason to move out and understanding the functionality of another (organization) will become easier for you.” (Unknown)
Since English has become the lingua franca in almost all the non-English speaking nations of the world, hence the language being used by most during trade and business is not a surprise. All forms of communication in trade and business, whether in writing like emails, letters or any presentations, or used during verbal communications like in meetings or telephonic conversations is done mainly in English in most of the non-English speaking nations.
Countries that do not share a common language often decide upon a language that is widely used and is popular among all. English has occupied that position and is used as the common language by all nations for the purpose of all kinds of communication. Those thinking of an English teaching career may well find various lucrative opportunities worldwide.
English as a language began spreading its wings since the colonial expansion and hence most countries whose first language is not English are familiar with the language. Except for the Far East countries like China and Japan, English as a language is used today in almost all nations. Knowing the various ways of fluent communication in English is a huge advantage in today’s world of cut-throat competition. English is also essential as it keeps the organizations in loop with the development in their area of business in the world market. Hence English has become the global language for business that eases trade, facilitating exchange of ideas and information necessary for the growth and development of the organization and the country as a whole.
Today English is spoken by around a quarter of the world population and has truly become a global language in every sense as it is being used in almost every sphere of life by countries and organizations looking forward to establish connections with other countries. These countries are therefore trying to acquaint and educate their younger population as well as the working professionals to the English language. Of course, these countries can hire translators and linguistic experts to act as a medium of communication, but in this process there is little personal relationship development where it never really goes past the formal acquaintances developed among each other, as they are not involved with the organization's affairs.
Discussed below are the factors which led to the rise of English as a language:
• The colonial expansion during the time of the British Raj and their industrial power which led to the spread of the language in the colonies
• In the later period, the rise and dominance of America in all spheres of life – politics, science and industry, movies and music, IT, internet, et al.
• The language had become so widespread than any other language that more and more countries chose English as a second language
• Also, English is relatively easier to learn with the flexibilities that it provides to all its speakersr
Just like technology comprising of the internet and media connects, which connects the whole world together where they are able to receive each other’s information, similarly English acts as the language that unites all. Moreover, English as a language is spoken by a quarter of the world population which is around 1.5 billion of the population.
English therefore acts as the binding element among the nations thereby giving every small and big organization the chance to explore better prospects and opportunities available in the market. In order to reach and at the same time remain at the top of the game requires something more than business knowledge and experience, and that something may just be knowing and being fluent in a common language of communication. Also, those contemplating of a career in teaching abroad are bound to find success in this field quite early in their career.
