A severe storm can strike at any time, with little warning. But there are simple steps to help keep your family safe. Heavy rain, high winds and hail which occur during storms can cause substantial damage to your property, personal possession. Physical damage to your family members may happen too. Often it is damage that can be prevented.
Sometimes, more money is spent on frivolous items and little on products which could save lives during and after a severe storm.
Police reports revealed that during the last 6 months, while people were exposed to Snowstorms, Flooding, Earthquakes and other disasters, few were prepared to protect themselves. Especially while travelling on the road. The report indicated that a low percentage of those travelling had little or nothing to give them shelter and warmthr
Not even a blanket.
Always remember, the personal safety of you and your family is of paramount importance.
Emergency Services say that the most important thing you can do to help keep your family safe in an emergency is to obtain an emergency kit.
Emergency kit is a pack of every day things that you'll need if you don't have electricity, water, food, shelter and warmth. The better you know what to do in an emergency the less likely you are to panic.
With a good first aid kit, you'll be equipped to help any family member who gets hurt.
Remember, you won't b able to reach a doctor or hospital until the storm has passed. Better still, learn basic first aid skills by taking a short course with St John Ambulance or other facility. When you travel with your family and friends, you are looking forward to a pleasant experience. Most folks prepare an itinerary, where to stay, to eat never or seldom are survival issues discussed. The vehicle you are travelling in is loaded with snacks, beverages, some spare clothing to wear in case of a rainfall. If there is space left, bicycles are tied up on the rear of your vehicle or the top.Yet... where is the survival kit and first aid kit, blankets, emergency medication. You want to return safely?
Watch out for lightning. Lightning occurs most often when you're in or near water.
If you are outside, find solid shelter - never shelter under a tree.
If you are driving, slow down or park away from trees, power lines and creeks or rivers.
To avoid panic especially with youngster or elderly folks in your party, take along emergency blankets, During and immediately after a storm, blankets offer heat, security and comfort.
