South Africa – Important Safety Tips For Travelers
Written by Deo Dup
No matter where in the world you are, you've probably heard of the high crime rate in South Africa. While its a day to day reality for the locals, it can be a very bad experience for visitors to this beautiful country. One of the reasons why tourists are often in the firing line is simply because they are not aware of the dangers. The reality is that hijackings, muggings and violent crime is a reality and you really need to “switch on” if you want to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
While accidents happen and innocent people are often victims you can still do everything you can to stay safe. If you are not used to looking over your shoulder in public places then you need to adopt that habit for the duration of your trip. Here are a few fundamental safety tips when traveling in South Africa.
1. Hijacking Zonesr
Hijacking Zones that have a high risk are usually market by roadside signs. You need to stay well clear of those zones after dark and even during the day you need to pay attention and try to never stop in these zones. If you are driving around the country then you need to be aware of the hijacking danger. Its recommended that you never drive late at night no matter where you are.
2. Public Placesr
Most city centers are high risk areas and you need to take particular care. Its recommended that you stay away from these areas at all costs. For shopping purposes you need to stick to shopping malls where there is ample security and good safety. Also, try and avoid the public transport at all costs as tourists simply do not have the know how on what to avoid. Taxi ranks are high risk areas for tourists.
3. After Darkr
If you feel like going for a walk along the beach at sunset, think again. Walking around after dark is not a good idea unless you are in a group or if you are in an area with good security. You are a soft target if you are caught outside alone at night. If you are out and about exploring the nightlife then you need to make good transport arrangements to and from your hotel.
If you ever get confronted by a mugger you are best off to simply comply to their demands and hand over your wallet. Resisting can be fatal as most mugger walk around with guns. While it might sound like the Wild West, its best to be aware of the potential dangers in order to be safe and to really enjoy all the sights and sounds that South Africa has to offer.
