Traveling around the world is a great experience, especially with friends and family. It is the best way to learn and unlearn a lot of things that we can never do living in the vicinity of our home. While being out of the house at a peaceful destination relaxes our mind, it also implies a cost, especially on the environment. Isn't it logical to return at least something to the environment when we take from it a lot? We always owe something to Nature, and you can do your part without making many efforts.

Being green does not mean you should be planting trees all around your city; it also means you should do your bit not to harm the environment as much as possible. Use the resources as efficiently as possible so that you can leave the minimum possible carbon print.

Plan well

Think of your mode of transport according to the destination you want to visit. If you are going to cover more than 500 kilometers, it is better to choose an airplane or a car. Moreover, try to pick a nonstop flight rather than a connecting flight wherever you go. This is particularly relevant when you have to go alone or with just one person. It is not wise to choose a car for less number of people. However, when you are a bunch of three people or more, you can rent a car or take your vehicle. Whichever option you choose, prefer greener options rather than flaunting your style. For instance, you can choose an economy class seat on a flight or a small hatchback car if possible to leave less carbon footprint on the environment.

Travel light

Have you ever thought why you have to pay more for your extra baggage on a flight? It is because the plane consumes more fuel for carrying additional load, and hence, the more amount of carbon footprint. This logic applies to traveling by car as well; the more weight you take, the more fuel your vehicle consumes. Plan your itinerary days in advance so that you do not pack unnecessary things you will not need. You should also use reusable shopping bags to carry everything you buy. Dump the stuff in your suitcase when you come to your hotel and carry the bags again the next day. Rather than purchasing water bottles frequently, bring refillable water bottles.

Turn off the appliances at the hotel

When you leave your home, you double check the electric switches of your refrigerator, lights, fans, ACs, and what not. Do the same thing at your hotel as well. Since you are not going to be in the room for the day, you must turn off everything you do not need when you leave the place unless someone is going to stay back.

Shop local things

When you go to a tourist destination, you may get fascinated by the local handicrafts. However, while buying such stuff, you may find them a little expensive and hence, drop the idea of purchasing them, and pick a cheaper machine-made item that may have arrived from China, for example. In spite of this, you should keep in mind that the imported things have a much larger carbon footprint than the local stuff, and you can support the native economy by purchasing the latter. Moreover, never think of buying anything that is made out of endangered animals; this is illegal as well as immoral to shop for such things. The homegrown organic produce is always healthier than the imported fruits and vegetables; buy healthy foods while shopping rather than choosing unhealthy snacks.

Explore the surroundings on foot

Once you reach the place, you can do yourself a favor by walking as it will keep you fit and will not hamper the environment in any way. You can also explore any place better when you travel slow.
