Storage Shed Plans - Selecting the Best Building Site for Your Shed
Written by Cole max
Once you have decided how large the shed should be and found the proper shed plans for it, you will now have to decide at what location you are going to build the shed.
Carefully consider the pros and cons of each location. Don't casually place the shed anywhere without proper consideration. This can cause you a lot of trouble in the future. The building department's regulations will certainly influence you choice of building site, but the next most important factor you must consider is the effect of the climate.
Distance from Home
If you are mainly going to use the shed for storage then you can build it farther from your house. You are most likely not going to need your gardening equipment every day. However, if you plan on keeping the children's bicycles and toys in the shed, then you should construct it as close to the home a possible to make it easily accessible.
If you will be using the shed for storing potted plant, then you should build it with the largest windows facing towards south, so that you can get the most sunlight.
Minimum Regulation Distance
The building department usually has laws regarding how far a building should be from the surrounding roads, wetlands, septic fields and property lines. Visit your local building department and get familiar with the rules before you pick the shed building site. If you cannot find a location which meets all the regulations, then you can apply your special case before the building committee. Most committees usually don't meet quite frequently, so make sure you submit the application as early as possible.
Level Ground is Necessary
Try not to build the shed on inclined land. Level out the ground as much as possible using rocks and gravel. If you still need to build on a slope, make sure the entrance of the shed is on the higher side. This will make it easier to enter and leave the shed.
Water Is the Enemy of Your Shed
Water is a big threat to the durability of your shed. Make sure that water does not get collected frequently at the construction site you have chosen. Too much water will result in quicker rotting of the wood and rusting of the metal parts of the shed. Also, too much moisture will enable the growth of mold. It will also be difficult to get in and out of your shed, if it is surrounded by water.
Don't' build your shed too close to the woods. This will restrict the air and sunshine received by the shed. Also, you will have to constantly keep a check on the vegetation growing around your shed. There is also the danger of some tree falling and damaging the shed.
Dead leaves, fruits and other debris like aco
s falling on and around your shed and creating an ugly heap. Clear out the building site before you start construction. Clear out any large boulder or loose rocks from the area and make sure the spot is able to receive ample sun and wind.
If you still wish to locate the shed within the forest, clear out some trees from around the shed and build it closer to the edge.
