Are you looking for a way to improve your smile and strengthen your teeth, but you really do not know what is going to work for you? If that is the case, you might be a candidate for dental implants. A loose tooth might mean there is internal problems with the tooth, or even a problem with the gums. You might also have deteriorating teeth with reduced enamel, leaving large gaps in between the different teeth you have. All of this can not only reduce the quality of your smile and strength of your teeth, but it can also reduce your confidence level as well. In order to correct this sort of issue, a dental implant can improve your smile, return straight to your teeth and give you that winning confidence you have been lacking for some time now.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is the insertion of a replicated tooth in the place of a missing or extracted tooth. It is designed to look and feel real, matching along with the rest of the teeth you have. There are different kinds of dental implants, where you might want to have a single implant for just one missing tooth, several implants along the same side of the mouth, or you can have all of the teeth inside of your mouth removed and the dental implants used to restore a completely perfect smile. In order to perform the dental implant, a metal post is inserted into the gums. Depending on the strength of the gums and what the dentist believes is best for you, the metal post might also extend through the jawbone, for extra support.
The metal post sticks out of the gum line, where the dental implant is placed over the post. If you are having three teeth implanted at once, you might only have two posts - one on each end - with all of the teeth soldered together and implanted. This way, you do not need a post for each tooth. For an entire row, the dentist might go with an all-on-4 implant option, where four posts are used in order to hold up the individual row. Regardless of the number of implants though, the general practice is the same.
It is important to not confuse a dental implant with other forms of oral improvements. A crown is something that is placed over a tooth that still has a strong root system, but has reduced in size due to deterioration. A bridge is something that is used in between two healthy teeth in order to hold up a fake middle tooth. While all of these can help improve your smile and dental health, a dental implant is going to give you the look of natural teeth and strengthen your entire smile and row of teeth.
What to Expect
First, the dentist is going to remove any teeth required for the implant. After the tooth is removed, the dentist is going to insert the post into the gums. From here, it is important for the gums to heal, especially if you are going with the all-on-4 option. It can take a few weeks for this to occur. Once the gums have healed though, the dentist is able to insert the permanent dental implant right into its position.
