Amritsar, district of Punjab, is the birthplace of Sikh religion, and popularly known as the cultural and spiritual place of this religion. The pilgrimage site of Sikh “Golden Temple” or Harmandir Sahib is located in this city and receives thousands of pilgrims not only from around the country but also from all over the globe. Home to the Golden Temple founded by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ram Das in 1604 and completed by his successor Guru Arjan Dev. The city is home of various artistry and tourism industry and also the of center of various commercial activities like pashmina shawls, thick serge, silk goods and carpets, panel pins, paper-cutting, engineering goods, textile machinery, wood and machine screws, printing and machinery, electric fans, chemicals and the textiles including woolen, silken, cotton etc. but in 1919; Jallianwala Bagh Massacre incident added a black past in the chapter of Amritsar. For getting around this beautiful city, hiring a cab is the best option as by booking a taxi to travel around, you would get to see the hustle and bustle on the streets of Amritsar and moreover you will also have the chance to cover more tourist places in a single day in case you are running short of time. There are several online car rental companies in Amritsar offering affordable and efficient car rental in Amritsar. Place to visit in Amritsar:rnGolden Temple: Also known as Harmandir Sahib, Golden temple plays a vital role in the culture of Amritsar. It proudly reflects the ideology of Sikhism viz. hard work, generosity, honesty and chivalry. Being the prominent attraction of the city, Golden Temple is also the prominent seat of Sikhism. Apart from its beauty and splendid architecture, Golden temple is known to organize the daily langar (charity kitchen) feeding 35000 people on daily basis. The four entrances on all four directions of the temple seems to be welcoming the people from all over the world. Jallianwala Bagh: Famous or better say infamous for the annihilation by General Dyer in 1919, Jallianwala Bagh today is visited by several tourists in Punjab. One can still pinpoint the bullets marks in the wall. This incident is about to complete its centenary in couple of years and yet, the unnerving story of vicious massacre makes us abashed of being civilized. The Jallianwala Bagh is evidence to the reminiscence of the ghastly event when British soldiers gunned down hundreds of innocent men, women and children. More surprising however, is the warmth with which the hospitable descendants of the dead open their arms to outsiders. Wagah Border:The Wagah Border came into existence when the Radcliffe line was drawn, thus distinguishing India and Pakistan, and dividing the village of Wagah into eastern and western parts. The eastern part went to India, and the western part in the newly born Pakistan. Often known as Berlin Wall of South Asia, Standing on the Grand Trunk road, Wagah Border silently witnessed the bloodshed of the partition and the migration of millions of people across its gates. The main attraction is the flag retreat ceremony being observed throughout the year as the sun sets. The ceremony starts at 4.00 pm. It’s merely 30 km away from Amritsar. You can hire a cab or book a taxi to reach here.
