ADONAI gave instructions to Moshe that the people of Isra'el are to make a sanctuary, the Ark of the Covenant, so that ADONAI can live among the people of Isra'el.
"They are to make me a sanctuary, so that I may live among them. You are to make it according to everything I show you -the design of the tabernacle and the design of its furnishings. This is how you are to make it. They are to make an ark of acacia-wood three-and-three-quarters feet long, two-and-a-quarter feet wide and two-and-a-quarter feet high. You are to overlay it with pure gold -overlay it both inside and outside -and put a molding of gold around the top of it. Cast four gold rings for it, and attach them to its four feet, two rings on each side. Make poles of acacia-wood, and overlay them with gold. Put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark; you will use them to carry the ark. The poles are to remain in the rings of the ark; they are not to be removed from it. Into the ark you are to put the testimony which I am about to give you. You are to make a cover for the ark out of pure gold; it is to be three-and-three-quarters feet long and two-and-a-quarter feet high. You are to make two k'ruvim (angelic beings) of gold. Make them of hammered work for the two ends of the ark-cover. Make one keruv for one end and one keruv for the other end; make the k'ruvim of one piece with the ark-cover at its two ends. The k'ruvim will have their wings spread out above, so that their wings cover the ark, and their faces are toward each other and toward the ark-cover. You are to put the ark-cover on top of the ark. Inside the ark you will put the testimony that I am about to give you. There I will meet with you. I will speak with you from above the ark-cover, from between the two k'ruvim which are on the ark for the testimony, about all the orders I am giving you for the people of Isra'el." Sh'mot (Exodus) 25:8-22
The Ark of the Covenant is YAH's promise to the people of Isra'el. "I will put my tabernacle among you, and I will not reject you, but I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people." Vayikra (Leviticus) 26:11-12
"I will live with the people of Isra'el and be their God: they will know that I am ADONAI their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt in order to live with them. I am ADONAI their God." Sh'mot (Exodus) 29:45-46
The Ark of the Covenant contains YHWH's testimony (the ten commandments). "Therefore, you are to keep the mitzvot, laws and rulings which I am giving you today, and obey them. Because you are listening to these rulings, keeping and obeying them, ADONAI your God will keep with you the covenant and mercy that he swore to your ancestors." D'varim (Deuteronomy) 7:11-12
"If you listen closely to what ADONAI your God says, observing and obeying all his mitzvot which I am giving you today, ADONAI your God will raise you high above all the nations on earth and all the following blessings will be yours in abundance if you will do what ADONAI your God says:" D'varim (Deuteronomy) 28:1-2
YHWH spoke to Moshe above the ark-cover, from between the two k'ruvim (cherubim). The glory of ADONAI was with the ark of the covenant. The ark of the covenant represented the divine & perpetural presence of YAH with the people of Isra'el. The ark of the covenant went wherever the Israelites went. It went before the Israelites when they marched from Mount Sinai & crossed the Yarden (Jordan) River. Many miraculous events accompanied the ark of the covenant becuase the presence and the glory of YHWH was with it!
"'So they set out from ADONAI's mountain and traveled for three days. Ahead of them on this three day journey went the ark of ADONAI's covenant, searching for a new place to stop. The cloud of ADONAI was over them during the day as they set out from the camp. Then the ark moved forward, Moshe said, "Arise, ADONAI! May your enemies be scattered! Let those who hate you flee before you!" When it stopped, he said, "Return, ADONAI of the many, many thousands of Isra'el!'" B'midbar (Numbers) 10:33-36
"The Ark for the Covenant of the Lord of all the earth is going ahead of you across the Yarden. Now choose yourselves twelve men out of the tribes of Isra'el, one man for each tribe. As soon as the cohanim, carrying the ark of ADONAI, put the soles of their feet in the water of the Yarden, the water of the Yarden will be cut off upstream. The people left their tents to cross the Yarden. The cohanim, carrying the ark for the covenant went ahead of the people. When the cohanim carrying the ark had waded into the water for throughout harvest season the Yarden floods its banks, the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away at town called Adam, the city next to Tzartan; so that the water flowing downstream toward the Sea of the 'Aravah, the Dead Sea, was completely cut off; and the people crossed over right by Yericho. The cohanim carrying the ark for the covenant of ADONAI stood fast on dry ground in the middle of the Yarden, while all Isra'el crossed on dry ground, until the entire nation had finished crossing the Yarden." Y'hoshua (Joshua) 3:11-17
Capture of the Ark of the Covenant by the Philistines:
"So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark for the covenant of ADONAI-Tzva'ot, who is present above the k'ruvim. The two sons of 'Eli, Hofni and Pinchas, were there with the ark for the covenant of God. When the Ark for the Covenant of ADONAI entered the camp, all Isra'el gave a mighty shout that resounded through the land. On hearing the shout, the P'lishtim (Philistines) asked, "What does this great shout in the Hebrews' camp mean?"Then they realized that the ark of ADONAI had arrived in the camp, and the P'lishtim became afraid. They said, "God has entered the camp! We're lost!" Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Samuel) 4:4-7
"'Eli was 98 years old, and his gaze was fixed, because he was blind. The man said to 'Eli, "I'm the soldier that came; I escaped today from the battlefield." He asked, "How did things go, my son?" The one who had come with the news answered, "Isra'el fled before the P'lishtim, and there was a terrible slaughter among the people. Your two sons, Hofni and Pinchas, also are dead; and the ark of God was captured. As soon as he mentioned what had happened to the ark of God, 'Eli fell backward off his seat next to the gate, broke his neck and died; for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Isra'el forty years. His daughter-in-law, Pinchas's wife, was pregnant and near delivery-time. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and husband were dead, she went into abnormal labor, bent over and gave birth. As she was dying, the women standing by her said to her, "Don't be afraid, because you have given birth to a son." But she didn't answer or show any sign of recognition. She named the child I-Khavod [without glory], saying, "The glory has departed from Isra'el"; because the ark of God had been captured, and because of her father-in-law and husband. She said, "The glory of Isra'el has gone into exile, because the ark of God has been captured.'" Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Samuel) 4:15-22
"'ADONAI began oppressing the people of Ashdod; he ravaged them, striking Ashdod and its surrounding area with tumors. When the people of Ashdod came to understand what was happening, they said, "The ark of the God of Isra'el can't remain with us, because he is oppressing us and our god Dagon." They summoned all the leaders of the P'lishtim and asked, "What are we to do with the ark of the God of Isra'el?" They answered, "Have the ark of the God of Isra'el carried to Gat." So they carried the ark of the God of Isra'el to Gat. But after it arrived there, ADONAI oppressed that city, causing terrible panic. He struck the people of the city, great and small alike; tumors broke out on them. Next they sent the ark of God to 'Ekron; but when the ark of God arrived in 'Ekron the 'Ekronim shouted, "Now they've brought the ark of the God of Isra'el to us, to kill us and our people!" So they summoned all the leaders of the P'lishtim and said, "Send the ark of the God of Isra'el away! Let it go back to its own place, so that it won't kill us and our people!"- because death and panic pervaded the whole city; God's oppression was very heavy there. The people who didn't die were struck with the tumors; and the city's cries for help reached the skies.'" Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Samuel) 5:6-12
"'The ark of ADONAI was in the country of the P'lishtim for seven months. Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Samuel) 6:1
The Ark of the Covenant is YAH's promise to the people of Isra'el, the people of G-D! It was blasphemous that it had been captured by idol worshipers so YHWH oppressed the Philistines with disease and death for their blasphemy and abomination. Eventually, the Ark of the Covenant was returned to the people of Isra'el.
"Sha'ul told Achiyah, "Bring the ark of God here"; for at that time the ark of God was with the people of Isra'el." Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Samuel) 14:18
"Then David, taking along the entire force he had with him then, set out for Ba'alei-Y'hudah to bring up from there the ark of God, which bears the Name, the name of ADONAI Tzva'ot enthroned above the k'ruvim." Sh'mu'el Bet (2 Samuel) 6:2
"They led it from the house of Avinadav on the hill, with the ark of God; Achyo walked in front of the ark. David and the whole house of Isra'el celebrated in the presence of ADONAI with all kinds of musical instruments made of cypress-wood, including lyres, lutes, tambourines, rattles and cymbals." Sh'mu'el Bet (2 Samuel) 6:4-5
"The Ark of the Covenant was placed inside of King Solomon's Temple. "King Shlomo (King Solomon) and the whole community of Isra'el assembled in his presence were with him in front of the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen in numbers beyond counting or recording. The cohanim brought the Ark for the Covenant of ADONAI in to its place inside the sanctuary of the house, to the Especially Holy Place, under the wings of the k'ruvim. For the k'ruvim spread out their wings over the place for the ark, covering the ark and its poles from above. The poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the Holy Place in front of the sanctuary, but they could not be seen from outside; they are there to this day. There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone which Moshe put there at Horev, when ADONAI made the covenant with the people of Isra'el at the time of their leaving the land of Egypt. When the cohanim came out of the Holy Place, the cloud filled the house of ADONAI, so that, because of the cloud, the cohanim could not stand up to perform their service; for the glory of ADONAI filled the house of ADONAI." M'lakhim Alef (1 Kings) 8:6-11.
Many archaeologist are searching for the ark of the covenant. Some claim that they have found it.The the Ark of the Covenant will never be found because it contradicts Yirmeyahu's (Jermemiah's) prophecy that another Ark of the Covenant will not be made. Why would Yirmeyahu make this prophecy if the original ark of the covenant was destined to be found.
It is written in Yirmeyahu that the time will come when the Ark of the Covenant will not be missed. "'ADONAI says, 'In those days, when your numbers have increased in the land, people will no longer talk about the Ark for the Covenant of ADONAI. They won't think about it, they won't miss it, and they won't make another one. When that time comes, they will call Yerushalayim the throne of ADONAI. All the nations will be gathered there to the name of ADONAI, to Yerushalayim. No longer will they live according to their stubbornly evil hearts. In those days, the house of Y'hudah will live together with the house of Isra'el; they will come together from the lands in the north to the land I gave your ancestors as their heritage.'" Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:16-18
The Ark of the Covenant will not be missed because YHWH will give the children of Isra'el a new heart of flesh. They will no longer rely on the Tablets of the law, the testimony, that was placed in the Ark of the Covenant because YHWH will write HIS laws on their hearts. YHWH will place HIS RUACH HAKODESH within the children of Isra'el to give them power to obey HIS Torah.
"'For this is the covenant I will make with the house of Isra'el after those days," says ADONAI: "I will put my Torah within them and write it on their hearts; I will be their God, and they will be my people.'" Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 31:33
"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit inside you; I will take the stony heart out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit inside you and cause you to live by my laws, respect my rulings and obey them. You will live in the land I gave to your ancestors. You will be my people, and I will be your God." Yechezk'el (Ezekiel) 36:26-28
Isra'el and all nations will call Yerushalayim the throne of ADONAI and the the glory and presence of YHWH will dwell therein forever and ever!
"After this, he brought me to the gate facing east. There I saw the glory of the God of Isra'el approaching from the east. His voice was like the sound of rushing water, and the earth shone with his glory. The vision seemed like the vision I had seen when I came to destroy the city; also the visions were like the vision I had seen by the K'var River; and I fell on my face. ADONAI's glory entered the house through the gate facing east. Next, a spirit took me up and brought me into the inner courtyard, and I saw ADONAI's glory fill the house. I heard someone speaking to me from the house, and a man was standing by me. He said, Human being, this is the place for my throne, the place for the soles of my feet, where I will live among the people of Isra'el forever. The house of Isra'el, both they and their kings, will never again defile my holy name by their prostitution, by burying the corpses of their kings on their high places," Yechezk'el (Ezekiel) 43:1-7.
The only remnant of the Ark in Jewish life today is the Holy Ark in which Torah scrolls are kept in synagogues. These Arks are often decorated with copies of the Tablets, reminiscent of the contents of the actual Ark of ancient times.
Again, as prophesized in Yirmeyahu, another Ark of the Covenant will not be made. Why? YHWH gave instructions to HIS servant Moshe to make the ancient Ark of the Covenant. YHWH will never give such instructions again because such instructions contradicts the prophecy in Yermeyahu chapter three.
