Most of us are fine with buying our wine at a store or ordering it at a nice restaurant. It comes in a bottle and we hardly think about how it came to us beyond that. Yet, there’s a lot of work that goes beyond that. For example, there was the harvesting and fermentation process. The making of wine is actually a very unique experience. If you’d like to take the opportunity to experiment with colors and flavors to create your own wine, here is what you need to know.

Purchase the Correct Equipment

You need to purchase good quality equipment in order to make quality wine. This doesn’t mean that you need to buy the most expensive items. You just want to find equipment that is clean and is easy to keep clean. A large part of the wine making experience is using sterilized equipment. You don’t want to have your wine come out tasting dirty or off. This can make the wine tasting experience less than ideal. It takes a fair amount of time to make your own wine. You want it to be something that you actually want to share with friends.

Select Your Ingredients

This is where you get to decide the type of wine that you’re making. You can select different varieties of wine just by using different grapes. Another consideration is making sure that you only have quality grapes. Strange or rotten grapes shouldn’t go into the fermentation tank. This can cause the flavor to be tainted. You can also experiment with adding unique flavor combinations. Try using a couple of different varieties of grapes to create your own vintage. Just make sure that they aren’t competing flavors.

Process the Materials

A part of processing the grapes is to strain out the juice. Many people enjoy this part of the process because it can be therapeutic. You get to crush the grapes any way that you see fit. The traditional method was to stomp on them in a barrel. You can also crush them with your hands. Just make sure to wash thoroughly before you start the crushing process. You may choose to add sugar to your mix. This will boost the alcohol content of the final solution. Allow to ferment and strain in between steps until it is clear.

Fill and Enjoy

Now comes the fun part of the wine making process. Your final solution is ready to be bottled. This is the last step before you can sit back and enjoy the vintage that you’ve created. The easiest way to bottle your wine is to use clear tubing that runs directly into the wine bottle. Make sure that the bottle and tubing are properly sterilized before you start. Once this is completed, you will need to allow the wine to rest for a few days. After this time period has passed, you can enjoy your creation.

Although most people probably don’t make their own wine, you can stand out by doing so. You can make an event of it by inviting your closest friends and family members to partake in your delicious creation. You can vamp up the flair a little by using special glassware, like that from Weston Table, that is just right for the occasion. There’s nothing better than seeing others truly enjoy something that you’ve made out of your own skill and efforts.
