The Importance Of Caring For Our Skin
Written by Healthnic
A healthy skin is crucial for a person’s appearance, but more importantly it performs many essential functions for the human body. Skin protects the body from viruses, bacteria and other microbes that a person may be exposed to. It also shields us from the harmful effects of the Sun namely ultraviolet rays that damage epidermal cells. Healthy skin produces vitami
D when exposed to the sunlight. Vitamin D is vital for bodily functions. Healthy skin keeps the body temperature stable.
The skin is the protective covering of the body. The skin acts as a barrier for germs and prevents them from damaging internal organs. Skin plays a role in maintaining the immune system and using the sense of touch.
Skin regulates the body temperature through perspiration. When body temperature rises, the sweat glands perspire and cool the body as the sweat evaporates. It is part responsible for the sense of touch. The skin works in conjunction with the nervous system to alert the body and react better to changes in the environment by feeling pain or pressure
When exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays, the skin manufactures Vitamin D, an essential vitamin for healthy skin. Vitamin D promotes the body's absorption of calcium, which is essential for the normal development of healthy teeth and bones.
Skin Is The Human Body's Largest Organr
Skin is the largest organ of the human body consisting of three layers of tissues. They are the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the paper-thin outer layer of the skin. The outermost epidermal layer consists of dead cells that are may flake or wash off. These are then replaced by newer cells manufactured in the lower portion of the epidermis which move upward to the outer layer of the skin. This cycle of cell production and replacement takes around 28 days.
The epidermal layer also contains melanocytes (cells that contain melanin i.e., the pigment that gives skin its color). The color of the skin is determined by the amount of melanin in the cells. More melanin means darker skin!
The middle layer of the skin or dermis contains the blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat glands and oil glands constituting almost 90 percent of the skin's thickness. It is constituted of collagen and elastic fibers that provide the skin strength and elasticity.
The deepest or subcutaneous layer of skin is primarily composed of fatty tissue as well as blood vessels and nerves. Body fat provides insulation from extreme heat and cold as well as cushioning the body from injuries.
