Everyone has a right to a perfect smile; it is said that the eyes are the window to the soul but it’s white teeth that attract people to you.
Tooth technology has come a very long way since the 1980s when dentists flooded into the UK to abuse the NHS by undertaking unnecessary fillings and extractions. Today, everyone can have a wonderful smile through simple procedures such as tooth whitening and crowns. Many people’s problems with their teeth stem from the days when tooth decay was caused by poor dental hygiene and primitive dentistry. Whatever your age, a big, brilliant smile lights up a room; consequently, everyone should want teeth that look naturally white and yet many people still flaunt battle-worn, naturally brown, gnashers!
One of the big signs of age is the colour and quality of people’s teeth but, today, it is possible to find a dentist in London who will not charge an extortionate sum to bring back or create for the first time, a perfect smile. Traditionally, leading London dentists will charge top dollar for treatment but, if you take a little time, you will find a London dentist who will work within the NHS system and still give you the choice of either silver or white fillings.
There was a time when an actor in a period movie would laugh and the audience could see that his teeth were filled from front to back with amalgam fillings. Instantly, the perfect smile and the suspension of disbelief came crashing down as the audience saw that the film star had had to endure numerous drillings. Today, it is a simple process to have old amalgam fillings removed and replaced with white fillings.
Makeover your smile
It is quite amazing how much money people are prepared to spend on their hair and how little money they wish to spend on their teeth. A natural smile is not one that looks false but it is also not one that displays chipped teeth, tooth decay and old black fillings. To look naturally good, we all have to take care of our hair, our skin, our weight and also our teeth. The best compliment that anyone can give to the world is a perfect smile.
Bridging the gap
Probably the greatest detriment to a perfect smile is a missing tooth which can have been caused by excessive tooth decay or some physical trauma such as an accident on a bicycle. Today, dentistry is so sophisticated that it is possible to fit a bridge and fill the gap with a tooth that perfectly matches the colour of the neighbouring teeth. Much more acceptable to people than dentures, a bridge is made from a mix of metal and porcelain with crowns placed on the neighbouring teeth to ensure that once the bride is in place it stays there.
Cosmetic teeth whitening
Teeth veneers – a blue print of the teeth to be veneered is taken and then once they have been made, the veneers are glued to the teeth to create a perfectly natural smile that looks like the original but is whiter.
Crowns – a more complete makeover for front and back teeth but with the result that the new teeth look naturally good.
Bleaching – various forms of bleaching have been used for stain removal but, today, an effective form of teeth whitening is through the use of hydrogen peroxide.
Laser whitening – a fibre optic light works with special whitening gel to restore teeth back to their natural colour; it is particularly effective if teeth have been stained by smoking, tea and coffee. The whitening process is to do with free radicals bonding to the molecules that caused the tooth to discolour. The treatment lasts about an hour and is not expensive.
Lumineers - Dental lumineers are the specially made ultra thin veneers that used to coat the teeth surface and give the shining appearance by hiding stained and coloured teeth. The principal advantage of this extra thin lumineers is that it requires minimal tooth preparation.
