âMetabolic efficiencyâ, this is how health is defined in the medical industry. A man of good health is metabolic-efficient. This means that the bodily systems and metabolic processes in the body are performing well. Health concerns many aspects like physical, mental, and psycho-emotional. Thus, a healthy man is functional in all aspects.
Physical Health. In referring to physical health, many people look at the outward appearance of their body. True, the external body may manifest signs of ill health. But it is the internal systems that really matter. How the bodily systemsâsuch as circulatory, digestive, respiratory, nervous, cardiovascularâcarry out their tasks can be felt by the person and seen in his outside physical appearance.
For instance, if any organ in the respiratory system has malfunctioned, the person may have difficulty in breathing. If the individual becomes restless and suffers from insomnia, it can be seen on his eyes and skin. Nonetheless, if all vital and non-vital organs are functioning well, the person can be said health. It can be felt by that individual and seen on his outside physical appearance.
Mental Health. The cognitive faculty is founded on the brain, the primary organ of the central nervous system. Good mental health does not mean that the person has high Intelligence Quotient or IQ. Anybody can be intellectual, yet suffer from mental ill-health. Besides the serious mental illnesses like dementia, Alzheimerâs disease, schizophrenia, hydrocephalus, and brain cancer, mental health can also be affected by anxiety, depression, and stress.
Doubtless, there are rare circumstances, in which the mental faculty is distorted in its functionality. But other factors and aspectâlike emotionsâ may have contributed to that condition.
Emotional Health. Many argue that anxiety, distress, and depression are emotions and thus do not affect the mental capacity of the person. Nevertheless, there are those who maintain that these conditions have something to do with the brain as well. Regardless, emotions impact the cardiovascular system more than they do the nervous system, particularly if such emotions connote negative.
General wellness is considered wealth. People endeavor to take measures in maintaining optimal health. Medical scientists after many decades of doing researches finally concluded that genes play a significant role in a personâs health. More than how what a person looks like and how intelligent he or she might be, genes are determining factors whether a person is pre-disposed to certain illnesses like specific cancer, heart problems, diabetes, obesity, sickle cell anemia, and Alzheimerâs diseases.
Some individuals may have inherited faulty or disease-carrier gene from either of their parents. These genes may or may not have the chance of developing into a disease, depending on other factors like environmental including exposure to chemicals, lifestyle, and diet.
Lifestyle and diet are part of the environmental factors. The physical body is built for activity. Living a sedentary lifestyle makes the body lose its natural flexibility and strength. Diet, too, through the choice of foods contributes either to good or ill health. Habits such as excessive alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking take their toll on oneâs liver and lungs and other pertinent organs.
