When you are a traveler at heart, you have the unparalleled opportunities to nurture cultural exchange, break down stumbling blocks, and create a progressive impact on the communities of the world. You can dismiss the stereotypes of your society, encourage local economy, and generate fresh perspectives and ideas to different places. However, it can be more challenging to travel for some people than others, but in the end, we achieve an improved sense of the world with a better version of ourselves.

The ugly side of the tourism is that the travelers often show up their worst side; they throw up in public, become repugnant to the locals, command things to fulfill their needs, and dodge local customs. And the worst thing is that they treat their holiday destination as their wild play area. In order to foster a civilized society, one should behave like someone who other travelers want to meet and know. We need to foster healthy social exchange, be gentle to others, and make the most of your travel experience. Pledge to yourself a few things that you will be a kind of traveler who ensures a positive existence on earth rather than becoming a cheesy vacationer.

Read about the place you are visiting

It makes sense to find out a few basic facts about the place you intend to visit. Rather than having a superficial perception of the place, you must catch on things like relative inflation or deflation of the place, safety matters, popular and offbeat places, the best mode of transport, culture, currency denominations, eating habits, etc. Read the blogs concerning the place to get the real and updated insights of the place, which fills the gaps left by the guidebooks.

Respect the local customs and culture

You may not know the language of every place you are traveling to, so you may hire a licensed local guide who can bridge the gap between you and the locals. The guide may also let you know if you are wearing something inappropriate in a religious place. Rather than clicking pictures of the impoverished, you may help them with food or clothes. Visit each place without any premonitions in your mind to have the best experiences with people.

Eat local food

Eat where the locals eat is not only great for your pocket, but also for the local communities. When you eat in a chain of restaurants, you cannot contribute to the tourist place. You can rather eat the authentic cuisines at the local restaurants at a reasonable price, all of which goes to the pocket of the restaurant owner. On the other hand, the tourist restaurants make cuisines that please everyone, which means they are a watered-down edition of the dishes that do not offend anyone, and are neither delicious like its genuine version.

Learn phrases of local language

You can acquire so much more out of your journey just when you know a few basic phrases of the local language. You can not only make friends with the natives but also benefit from not getting looted by the guides and local transport owners.

Do not negotiate in excess

Do understand that the tourist towns are dependent on the travelers for their source of livelihood. When you want to buy something and find it overpriced, negotiate only up to a limit that is acceptable to the seller and you. Do not ever force a seller to sell something at your desired price. Most tourist regions are poor in reality, and they cannot afford to sell things below a particular limit. However, if you find that someone is trying to cheat you, you can simply walk away rather than negotiating or cursing them.

Do not expect the locals to accept your traditions

You need to realize that you are new to the city you are exploring and it is you who needs to adjust with the natives rather than the other way round. Even if you do not like something at the place, do not interfere in the matters of the locals, unless you find something really gross and it becomes necessary to intervene.

Party in a responsible manner

Yes, you are on holiday and you may find this opportunity as the last in your lifetime, which is why you might want to be the wildest party animal on earth. However, it is your responsibility as a traveler to behave well even in an unknown place so that the locals respect you and the future travelers. In addition, respect your roommates in the hostel or hotel; party well but do not create a nuisance for others. Drink when you want to, but learn to be in your senses.

Keep the city clean

It is the common responsibility of every person to keep your hometown as well as tourist town clean. Yes, the hotel is not your home, but that does not give you the liberty to make it a mess. Similarly, do not spread filth when you are out in the public places just because you do not live in the town.

Do not show off to your fellow travelers

You may be tempted to ask generic questions to your fellow travelers about the places they have been to, things they have done, the food they have tried, etc. The common intention behind asking these questions is to satisfy the urge of competing with others and feeling a notch higher than others. For the best of your mental health and that of others, you must refrain from asking these questions and indulge in healthy chatting with them.
